It's actually quite difficult to avoid hearing about important events even if you tried. You're not obligated to be up-to-date about everything that's going on. You can't. You're always missing stuff. Most of the information on the internet called "news" is just junk anyways and you're probably better off not filling your mind with it.
Don't want to tell anyone how to live their lives but just my two cents.
