I think that this is worth looking into further, because I think some important findings were redacted. A poorer body image is known to develop depression over time in some cases ("No one will ever love me" etc). Also, isn't soc media a large contributor to male loneliness? I feel some large topics were overlooked.
It also doesn't help that the way they decided who is depressed and who isn't is by asking the participants to fill out a questionnaire which isn't anonymous (or at the very least it isn't mentioned in the article). Some depressed people will never admit that they are depressed, a lot of them spend their entire lives "wearing masks" to hide it. I'm miserable and pray that a truck would run me over every morning but I still show up with a smile to the office.
From reading the scientific publication I gather that they use the DSM criteria for depression.
