Your carrots look so nice! Mine usually look like eldritch monstrosities, I haven't really figured out why...
sounds like your soil might be too hard. add more sand to your soil and it should make it easier for the roots to propagate.

Unless you're willing to put in a lot of sand then you're probably best just adding organic material on top and letting nature do its thing.
