She might be so deluded as to think she’s never been wrong before, or to have never actually changed her mind on anything. If that is the case, then her mind actually changing might appear as if the thing it’s changing about is what changed, even if nothing there has changed at all.

The mind is incredibly good at deluding itself. And mental illness is rampant and in America barely noticed at all. She probably doesn’t think her mind has changed, literally.
