Well, I did not have my shit together, so no shaves since last weekend. I had to wear a bearnet every day at work, ugh.
I guess I really need to adjust my sleep schedule so there is time to shave before work, but it is already so early for me to wake up at 5am :( many of my coworkers wake up at 4 or even 3:30...
Finally I have time to shave now that it is the weekend :)
I have to get up early (5:20) once or twice a week. I shave the evening before π
I usually get up at 3:30. It's really early.
With a week's worth of growth, you'll have a magnificent shave!
Thatβs wild, I donβt think I could function with that schedule.
What time do you normally sleep?
I usually go to bed at 8:30 or 9. I'm not saying that I'm functional that early. Shower, shave, drive to work then breakfast and coffee at work. :) Ten hour days so I get all Fridays off.
Your schedule is my goal. I'm also 10 hrs/day, M-Th, but usually I get to bed around 10 or 11 and get up at 5. I used to work 11AM-7PM so this has been a huge adjustment for me. How do you handle meal times? I feel like eating late dinner is maybe the #1 thing holding me back from adjusting my sleep schedule more successfully.
I try to eat dinner around 6 but it only happens a few days a week. I've stopped sleeping in on the weekends. That's helped with setting the routine and making it easier.
Somebody think of the sink!
Even though I rarely have taken the time to shave properly in the last few weeks, I also second the idea of shaving the night before. It's basically what I do whenever I have an early shift at the hospital - I need to be there before 6:00 AM, so I need to get up shortly after 4 AM... There's no damn way I would be functional enough for complex tasks like maintaining a good razor angle at that time, since I am a "night owl" or more accurately "Late Chronotype 2". I usually go to bed around 1:30 to 3 AM if I can choose freely. The only downside to night shaves is that you won't be able to use strong matching fragrances/EdPs after your shave, but that's a minor gripe compared to cutting yourself up because you shaved while still extremely tired. By the mention of a beard net, I assume you do something in the food industry or in a restaurant. So don't worry, you won't need to have a fresh clean BBS shave every day for work. In fact, even the best electric shavers used in the morning can only come close to the results of a proper wet shave done the night before.
So far the shaving the night before has been my strategy as well, it's just tough for me to always do that and get to bed on time. Other than the weekend, it actually works better for me to use a fragrance in the evening for personal enjoyment as fragrances are not allowed at my workplace.
The draw of shaving in the morning is that I could do a quicker/less good shave potentially and get away with it. Unfortunately part of my job is telling other people when they need to put a beard net on, so I feel like I need to hold myself to a relatively high standard, so I need at least a fairly close shave if it is to be a night-before-shave.
Oh, I know that struggle well. You want a really close shave since it needs to last way into the next day and in turn you spend a lot of time trying to get it absolutely perfect. Mostly it's just you yourself being your own worst critic, as other people will barely notice any minor stubble on your face and still think you look well-groomed. The part about fragrances being completely disallowed in your workplace sounds crazy though, I can see it being required to be toned down/not overdone, but what are they going to do about aftershave and deodorant? An EdT should probably be fine IMHO unless someone doused their body in it. I'd rather have my colleagues smell like their fav fragrance than like sweat, but company policies don't necessarily need to make sense.
As for tips to make your shave faster: drop any unnecessary pre-shave stuff besides a hot washcloth applied to the area you want to shave. You'll also wet the hair and make it softer this way, 2 for 1. Have a soap you can lather pretty quick and easy, my personal go-to are Chiseled Face or Stirling soaps for fast shaves. Bigger brushes help for getting a soap lathered faster, as I learnt from shaving my head (huge surface). Get comfortable with longer razor strokes if you're past the beginner stage (I just assume you are, since you post SOTDs regularly). Certain razors are more suited to quick shaving, like with an aggressive razor (more blade exposure and feel) you can generally get done in two passes instead of three. An AC blade razor can lend itself well for the purpose as the blades are wider than a DE razor, for example. Aftershaves in a spray or pump bottle also save time, even if it's just a minor amount.
