David Sedaris talked about movie culture in France in one of his essays. He described the audience as absolutely silent.

that's... just most movie theaters. the us is a very weird exception, not the rule.

Ya fr I've been going to the movies at least 5-6 times a year for 30 years and I can only recall one time that someone was disruptive enough to say something, and an usher dealt with it before I did. I know it does happen, but it's not nearly as ubiquitous as memes will make it seem.

Twice, it was so loud we couldn’t hear anything. Ushers are high school kids, mostly, they’re not going to do anything. Twice the option wasn’t to do anything about it but offer us refunds instead.

Granted, it’s been awhile. I was near to teenager age those 2 times.
