As far as I'm aware the defining quality of a Metroidvania is backtracking and unlocking new branches/offshoots/areas of previous zones as you unlock new movement abilities. Which is why Control almost qualifies as a Metroidvania. No idea about this game though.
I’d add that some people delineate between the two with the idea that Zelda-likes have dungeons and metroidvanias don’t.
