This is why I always use the more mysterious “partner” instead of boyfriend/girlfriend/husband/wife/etc.

I do the same thing and people are sometimes visibly confused when my partner turns out to be opposite-sex 😊

...i've always used significant other or spouse because partner implies transactional logistic or business relationships...
