Welcome

Welcome to c/vegan@lemmy.world. Broadly, this community is a place to discuss veganism. Discussion on intersectional topics related to the animal rights movement are also encouraged.

What is Veganism?

'Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals ...'

— abridged definition from The Vegan Society

Rules

The rules are subject to change, especially upon community feedback.

  1. Discrimination is not tolerated. This includes speciesism.
  2. Topics not relating to veganism are subject to removal.
  3. Posts are to be as accessible as practicable:
    • embedded images of text require alt-text
    • posts with an image of text should have a transcription in the body or alt-text
    • paywalled articles must have an accessible non-paywalled link;
    • use the original source whenever possible for a news article.
  4. Content warnings are required for triggering content.
  5. Bad-faith carnist rhetoric & anti-veganism are not allowed, as this is not a space to debate the merits of veganism. Anyone is welcome here, however, and so good-faith efforts to ask questions about veganism may be given their own weekly stickied post in the future.
    • before jumping into the community, we encourage you to read examples of common fallacies here.
    • if you're asking questions about veganism, be mindful that the person on the other end is trying to be helpful by answering you and treat them with at least as much respect as they give you.
  6. Posts and comments whose contents – text, images, etc. – are largely created by a generative AI model are subject to removal. We want you to be a part of the vegan community, not a multi-head attention layer running on a server farm.
  7. Posts linking to Twitter/X or any similarly far-right site will be removed.
  8. No brigading, either off-site or on-site. An incitement to brigade includes two elements: a call to disruptive action and a specific direction outside of this community in which to take that action. Exceptions include:
    • Calls to boycott.
    • Calls to in-person protest of a government, high-profile individual, or company/organization.
    • Votes provided they have a sufficiently broad target audience or provably effective controls against vote brigading.
    • Petitions.
  9. All Lemmy.World Terms of Service also apply.

How is it any people cannot put themselves in that place with imagining? Even animals could identify with what would not be desirable. Humans should have the sensibility to know they would not want what the animals being used are put through, we can likewise choose to not have anything to do with that, and we can already find out ourselves that there are ways to be very healthy this way without products from animals. And the same amount of use of resources for it and contribution to damage to environments with loss of species does not need to be continued then. https://healthyaging.emory.edu/could-eating-30-plants-a-week-be-the-answer-to-better-health/

Chickens are processed at 10-16 weeks depending on breed. They are not tortured when processed. They are tortured when they are alive. Be upset at factory farming not eating meat. A properly raised and processed bird doesn't suffer and has a happy life. Problem is, that costs a lot more.

It is all connected, this can be found to be true. Demand runs factory farming continually. Chickens are held captive until slaughtered however it is done and they value their eggs. Do you really not eat other meat? No meat is making you healthier than you could be with a variety of whole foods all from plants. And there are tasty meals, that I know about, this way. I can be a source of helpful information for that, but there are other ways of having information for that.

Going with your number of 16 weeks and the 10 years from the OG post, that's equivalent to 160 weeks of life for a human with an life expectancy of a 100 years. Just about 3 years. Regardless of your death or how you spent these years, few people would call that a 'happy life'.

Eh... It depends on what your process is, but most broiler chickens are killed at factory type farm operations at 5 weeks. The real questionable statistic in this is for cows, which rarely are slaughtered before they reach 24-28 months.

Be upset at factory farming not eating meat. A properly raised and processed bird doesn't suffer and has a happy life. Problem is, that costs a lot more.

I think it'd be a fair criticism to say that most Western diets contain entirely too much meat, and that is a problem not only for humans, but a huge problem for the environment.

It wouldn't be possible to ethically source enough meat to meet the current global demand. So imo having a meat heavy diet is a valid criticism. The morality of actually eating meat doesn't even have to come into the equation to determine that our current diets are unsustainable and actively harmful.

The way the word "processed" is used so casually is really saddening.

If you're going to do this at least be honest about it instead of hiding behind these words to make it seem less terrible. You're killing and dismembering these birds.

[–] Auli@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 week ago

Sure doesn't bother me and I kill and butcher my own animals.

Honestly i could not care less how you frame it. Words are just words and somebody could just as well say euthanazied and prepared and it would mean the same thing.

I personally find this kind of things extremelly naive. Prey animals life is horrible and filled with constant dread of everything even without human intervention.

Reason why im against eating meat is because meat industry is bad for enviroment and modern day humans, at least in developed countries dont need that industry to survive.
