Discord has communities.

Want to build a voron 3d printer? -> discord.

Want to be part of the development of some Indy game? -> discord.

Want to engage with some community from a YouTube channel? -> discord.

Some GitHub project? -> discord.

The list goes onโ€ฆ.

Is it open or locked to the platform? All them conversations are private then, people cant find them in five years when they have the same issue

Yes. It is a closed platform. But you asked why people use it.

[โ€“] Squizzy@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Absolutely, not shitting on you just I thought people generally preferred open platforms for these discussions. Would make sense for a group chat to me which is where I cant see it differntiating from the normal platforms

Something like Discord is like a community Swiss army knife.

Text channels, threading, voice channels, video streaming, screen capture. And the user interface doesn't look like it still stuck in 2005.

The drawback is that Discord is owned by a for-profit Corpo that is forced to bow to the ever increasing mass surveillance that countries are implementing.

Something like Fluxer functions almost exactly like Discord, but will allow for self-hosting and, eventually, Federation.

Seems like you have never used Discord.

I dont get it, its UI or purpose. I have it for three groups that are somewhat quiet
