A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

I'm so old I remember when people would read the newspaper.

Like, read every sentence in every story of each day's newspaper, trusting the editor not to print anything that would be too much of a waste of time.

I still remember newspapers...

I was born in 2002, China.

I remember my dad always had newspapers... we didn't have internet... (I think I remember there being a TV, not sure how the news is run... but pehaps it wasn't on 24/7? I mean maybe we kids just hogged up the TV for kids stuff so they had to read newspapers)

I remember I think I sometimes sat on my dad's lap and I'd kinda just annoy him while he read lol... cuz I was attention seeking

I sometimes tried to read it too...

I remember sometimes I grabbed it because I was bored there are characters I didn't recognize and I wouldn't even know how to look up the definitions... cuz there was no Google Lens or that sort of thing... and its Logographic so I probably had no clue how to even look it up in a dictionary (didn't remember even having a dictionary I don't think), like you can't just down down alphabetical order like in English.

I mean for someone with no internet access, newpapers seemed interesting... like its vast amounts of info... a window to the outside world... (we weren't allowed outside much due to fears of kidnappers)

I remember more vividly when we firsr moved to NYC and dad had the 星島日報 Singtao Daily Newspaper thing... it's all in traditional chracters and it made my head hurt lol...

Also I remember there are like free 大紀元 (The Epoch Times) stuff lying around that are free...

When I was a kid I didn't know much about the world, but my dad was like "Oh these are the 'Anti-China' newspapers made by the Falun Gung Cult", but he grabbed them anyways since they were free, and for a while I sort of viewed those as like "evil newspaper" that is "tainted"... lol...

Nowadays they just doomscroll WeChat for news...
