Although modern politics has changed things, rednecks have historically been anti authority and pro labor. Building a rural/urban alliance like Bill Clinton did would genuinely create an entirely new era of politics that would be friendly to liberal leftist ideologies.

uhhhh racism? in the united states redneck is === racist asshole. the racism is a part of their identity... not sure how it escaped your entire question.

Yeah.. the "rednecks" reserve real comradery for people ridiculously similar to themselves. They'll befriend whoever they actually have to spend time with as "one of the good ones" but ultimately hold a position that's deeply corrosive to diverse, leftist community

Working in a manufacturing plant in a deep red county, I can absolutely attest to that

At the Battle of Blair Mountain, whites, blacks, and other immigrants faught side by side as rednecks together for the right to unionize.

West Virginia’s Bloody Fight for Civil Rights

this may come as a shock, but things have dramatically changed in the last 105 years

[–] CubitOom 3 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

You mean big companies no longer work with the government to interfere with workers trying to unionize?

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 2 weeks ago

More like decades of anti-union propaganda, plus culture war bullshit, have conditioned the people of West Virginia (and the US as a whole) to be against unions

Nah they have fighter jets though.

I really think it isn't fair to generalize all rednecks as racist. I grew up in Kentucky and that definitely isn't how it is.

There's 3 types of rednecks:

  • Not racist
  • Ignorant but welcoming (they may say something questionable, but only because they don't know better and will apologize)
  • Racist.

I think most I've met have been #1 or #2. If you ostracize a large portion of the population, of course they aren't going to be on your side

if you vote for racists, youre a racist. theres not a lot of ambiguity there.

[–] cole@lemdro.id 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

that's a very black and white view of things but real life isn't so pretty.

some people are intentionally misled or just not informed enough.

you alienate people by assuming they're racist when they're often not. I mean, it's a choice. but it's not gonna win you an election and I don't think it'll move the US forward.

[–] originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

yes, just like religion being an inherent evil taught to impressionable children, so are many racist people they are led down that path blindly and ignorantly follow it til death. the brainwashed masses

we actually fought an entire war over the concept... and the racists still try to pretend it wasnt racism, it was states rights to be racists

its kinda like that old trope about nazis... you let a nazi sit at your table, there is now a table full of nazis. you can blow up all you want about ambiguity, but theres no ambiguity when you vote for racist or pedophile. none. zero.

[–] cole@lemdro.id 3 points 2 weeks ago

I'm sorry, this is naive.

You may have voted for a pedophile and you just don't know it yet.

People's true colors are not always so readily apparent
