I keep wanting to check things like this out, and then I remember there's not even any Switch games I want to play. I tried the open world Pokémon game when that came out years ago, purely just to see what they did (it was boring as fuck, as pretty much everyone agree). The only other thing is maybe TotK, but there's better things (in my opinion) that I still need to play. Shadow of the Erdtree, for example, is something I still need to get around to.

If anyone actually does think there are Switch games worth playing, in your opinion, what are they? I'm curious. I have to admit I avoid most advertising and don't follow Nintendo stuff, so there could be things I'm not aware of.

Here's my whole library if you want to see everything I like. Some notable exclusives:

  • Super Mario Odyssey - IMO, this is right up there with 64. The game is absolutely packed, biggest in the series, and I love everything they've done with new movement techniques.
  • Splatoon 3 - And 2, but not like there's any reason to back to S2 now. I've never really been into shooters much, Splatoon, Kid Icarus Uprising, and TF2 are the only ones I've really liked. But I do love this game because it's so unlike ordinary shooters.
  • Metroid Dread - Hits all the same highs as Super, but with significantly better combat and bosses. Yes, I'm saying that makes it better than Super.
  • Puyo Puyo Champions - Not actually exclusive, but if you want to play this game online, JP players are all on Switch. So functionally, it might as well be exclusive.
  • Kirby Air Riders - I waited 22 years for this sequel. I bought a Switch 2 just to play this. And it was worth it. I'm actually blown away by how much higher this game raised the bar from the original.

Can eden play air riders?!?!?

[–] missingno@fedia.io 1 points 3 weeks ago

No idea, but I'm assuming probably not.

Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom have an atmosphere like a Studio Ghibli movie. If that doesn't appeal to you than I guess you won't like those games.

[–] Cethin@lemmy.zip 5 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

It looks fine. It's more the gameplay that doesn't seem appealing. It seems almost frictionless. There's too many games that do something similar that are more appealing to me. I've been meaning to get into Outward (I own it, but I haven't put the time into it to get far), but now Outward 2 is on the horizon. It's open world adventure, but it actually asks the player to think and put some effort into it.

[–] Tattorack@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I mean... The Legend of Zelda also asks you to think and put some effort into it, in the form of dungeon puzzles. It's the gameplay specifically what I compare to the atmosphere of a Ghibli movie.

I've played Outward. It's... Incredibly janky, and also tries to be a very hardcore type of game. I don't think it can be adequately compared to something like Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom.

[–] Cethin@lemmy.zip 1 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

They can be compared in that they're both open-world action-adventure games. I can't play every game, and of those I'm much more interested in Outward, because it's trying (and often failing, but still trying) to do something really interesting. BotW was trying to do something others have done, just very polished. I'm more interested in the games who are experimenting, even if I have to deal with a bunch of jank.

BotW and TotK make you think, but in a way that a child can complete it without much issue. That's fine, but that's their target. If it's harder than that then it's too hard for the game. This isn't a complaint, but an observation. It's like going to Pokémon and expecting a challenge. It's literally made for children, so it's not going to be there. It's on me if I go in expecting a challenge.

There is no open world game like Breath of the Wild. But your loss.

I don't understand how Nintendo is charging over $100CAD/game and can't bother to hire voice actors for this shit. I tried BOTW and it felt like a shitty asset flip to me that was way overpriced. Sold my switch and went back to just PC and emulation

[–] Tattorack@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Sounds like you're unfamiliar with Japanese games. It's not typical for them to have full voice acting.

Calling anything from The Legend of Zelda a cheap asset flip is quite something, though.

[–] lemonySplit@lemmy.ca -4 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

I mean are they not using essentially the same assets since ever? Every game they put out just feels like regurgitated IP to maximise profits at this point.

Edit: and ref the voice acting, that's fine if they want to go that route, I realize a lot of people like it. But if they don't need entire departments other studios have then they shouldn't be charging so much for the game was my point.

[–] Tattorack@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago

... No? Most Legend of Zelda games use the same style maybe twice or thrice... if that. New style means new assets, new models and textures. So they're not simply reusing assets.

And I strongly disagree. For a game to be priced lower it needs to actually have less value. Not simply be absent of something you're used to in Western games.

[–] nightlily@leminal.space 10 points 3 weeks ago

The Xenoblade Chronicles trilogy if you like JRPGs.

I really enjoyed Zelda BOTW. I beat it. Then I did this weird glitch that requires you to beat it twice more without dying once, but you get to keep this crazy Light Bow thing forever. I spend like a week accomplishing that glitch. Then I spent like 6 months hoping on it every once in a while, just to ride around the map and shoot things with that bow. Eventually I lost my game save, and now I don’t play it anymore… I would, if I didn’t have to spend another week on a glitch to get my bow back. Now I just look at it, remembering the good times.

[–] CosmoNova@lemmy.world 10 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

While BOTW is a masterpiece in my opinion, it‘s not a Switch exclusive. You don‘t even need a Switch or Switch emulator to play it. Many people even recommend emulating the WiiU version specifically. The WiiU is a much better platform for Zelda games anyway.

Here's a suggestion you never see, but I loved it: Astral Chain.

Also, as others have said, Super Mario Odyssey is legit the best 3D platformer ever made.

Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury is also pretty great.

[–] vividspecter@aussie.zone 5 points 3 weeks ago

Visual novels are well represented and sometimes more complete than their PC counterparts as it has become pretty dominant in Japan. Other than that, I've never really gotten into Nintendo's first party games either. Somehow, they just don't hold my attention.

[–] eatsnutellawivaspoon@feddit.uk 5 points 3 weeks ago

The metroid prime 1 remake is fantastic, metroid dread is pretty good too. Nintendo has a unique style with their first party games and while that's a good thing for the market as a whole, you're right that if it's not your cup of tea there's really not much on the switch for you.

[–] makyo@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Pretty much all the games made by Nintendo themselves. Mario Odyssey is great and one of their all time best. It’s a psychedelic trip sometimes.

[–] theskyisfalling@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I feel the same but what it comes down to for me is I hate Nintendo IPs and for the most part it is the Nintendo games that bring people to their consoles.

Pretty much everything else is available elsewhere. Or at least that is the impression I get. Does the console have any noteworthy exclusives that aren't Nintendo characters.

Pokemon would be the main thing that appealed for me too but I liked red, blue, stadium and that was about it. I didnt play much after that and what I did didnt stick so I think I'd have similar feelings to you towards the new ones.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Astral Chain was great, and probably runs better on emulator than original hardware
