Look this is all good and well but can someone explain what "woke" is?
Originally ‘woke’ meant being aware of social injustice, especially racism. Over time it evolved to become associated with broader progressive politics more broadly, now it’s used to either insult or compliment depending on who is speaking.
Yeah all right, that's as good a definition as any I suppose. It's still something about it, though, it's like this term that means everything and nothing, and lends itself super well to nebulous definition, so no one can really decide what it is whether they are for or against it. It's messed up.
It's like, I think just calling things "leftist" is a way dumb oversimplification- much more so than I think that "conservative" is even though that definition is even looser and completely devoid of actual ideology, even by their own admittance.
I don't know, I just find this whole shitshow tiring, I'm not sure what we're doing here.
I mean, I feel like woke isn't a thing to be for or against, it's literally being aware. There is an implied woke=anti-cruelty, but I feel like you can be woke and support the oppression of others through the power of the system. Just don't expect other people to recognize your "wokeness" or be pleased that you're so aware that the things you're doing are cruel and shitty.
This feels like my step dad being upset that the weather channel is trying to scare us by calling it an atmospheric river! Like dude we're using a fun new term to describe a weather pattern, it just means rain if you're caught beneath the river. Not scary unless you're in a flood zone.
But that is what it has grown into. A sweeping semantic and perfectly malleable construct that can occupy everyone's minds while the oligarchy just laughs and counts its money.
With apologies to the baseball fans in the room...
YOU CANT JUST BALK
Sorta been answered but worth noting there's more than one definition, and if the person you're speaking to/arguing with aren't using the same one then you'll never agree because you're debating different points.
One is the "socially aware" definition, and seems to be the one claimed by most on here. It means your eyes/mind are open etc.
Another refers to performative virtue signalling, where someone is desperately looking for something to make themselves appear socially aware / "awake", regardless of their actual position on the matter, if they even have one. That is where the pejorative usage comes from.
If someone uses "woke" as an insult is likely they're placing the target in the latter category.
One is an attempt at a lexical definition, the other a judgment of it, those are different things, but you are definitely clearing something up here, because what I feel like I'm getting at is that there is one definition that is actually solid and makes sense- being socially aware, being aware of systemic racial and social injustice in general, and another where "being woke" is performative and is just being obstinate about everything and anything and demanding justice for unspecified grievances that one might not even have legitimate claims to.
I don't know if that makes sense to you but I think it's kind of the core of the matter, really.
the original term was often used in african-american communities to describe an awareness of the oppressive systems of racism, law enforcement, the atate and such. nowadays it is used pejoratively by far-right american talking heads as a fear-mongering word for whatever they disagree with
Sure
Being aware of racial prejudice, is what I'm getting.
it has recently expanded to include all forms of systematic prejudice, but yeah that's the gist
"Woke" means one thing to one group of people and the exact opposite to another group of people. Makes it hard to have intelligent discussions for sure.
