Don't know where did cm0002 appear from, not sure if he's wearing a cape, even, but all I know is that he's the hero we need.

[–] one_old_coder@piefed.social 17 points 1 month ago (3 children)

IMHO he's spamming and evading bans with his 10 accounts. Not worth it.

[–] cm0002@toast.ooo 20 points 1 month ago

I just crosspost the post from 1 .ml comm to 1 relevant non-.ml comm maintaining the crosspost as best I can so that it collapses (for people with supporting clients at least)

Not really fitting the common definition of "spam", Users like Chobeat are probably closer to an actual spammer since when they post to the technology -.ml comm I can't crosspost it anywhere because they literally sent it to just about every "technology" comm on the Threadiverse LMAO

but even then I wouldnt consider it actual spam

I'm also not evading bans, my accounts are not banned anywhere to the best of my knowledge (well except for .ml, but that's a given lol) and I just rotate through them over and over again. I haven't made a new one in a long time.

In fact, I've recently added a listing of accounts used for this crossposting purpose to the bottom of my megathread here if you wish to block them and I'm updating the bios on each account as I use them to include a similar blurb for people

10?? I've blocked at least 20 cm0002s?! And they keep coming.

[–] OpenStars@piefed.social 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Tbf, some of those are other people mad at them.

Also it's helpful that they are all labeled the same, unlike the traditional ban evasion tactics using different names to obscure their true origins.

Weird. I wouldn't have expected that. But yes, according to their megathread in the sister comment, about 5 on my blocklist are unaccounted for.

Anyone can impersonate anyone here at any time, it is one of the gaping holes in the Threadiverse that keeps content creators with some actual fame from wanting to come here.

On Mastodon, Friendica, Pixelfed and if I'm not mistaken also Bookwyrm you can verify yourself by using your own website (if you have one). You can also do it for free if you have an account on a bunch of services such as Gravatar.

I haven't seen anything like this on Lemmy fwiw.

I mean to also be fair here, that's not a unique feature of the Fediverse. We currently have some drama (in Germany) about people impersonating people on X. The commercial platforms even earn money doing the same thing. And it's very clear in the prelude to a potential court case, they have no intention to stop this. They're currently doing some really weird shenanigans so the lawyers can't serve any papers or mail.

Not sure how it is on other platforms. It's been a while since I helped people to get rid of unwanted content on social media. But it was never easy. And once you do it for privacy reasons or mild doxxing, you're basically screwed. Because these days they'll all make you pull down your pants to prove it's legitimate. So you basically end up doxxing yourself to protect your private information. I mean what's more likely to happen is, they don't even listen. But I'm not really up to date with that any more. Maybe they changed and now they do? But I doubt it. It's just how the internet operates.

Fair. Separately from the actual facts is the feelings that people have where e.g. a blue checkmark means something other than mere money, which is a marketing gimmick.
