If I know smart people, the one thing they love is constantly having to fight for resources and their job, at lower pay than they deserve, with a risk of getting censured and death threats if what they publish upsets the uneducated masses or moneyed interests.
It's true. Living like actual people feels degenerate to us. We need the abuse.
There are enough smart people who do love exactly that because it proves their superiority.
I don’t think the intersection of “scientist” and “masochistic asshole” is actually big enough to carry us.
Nobody loves that. But there are people who love doing science, so they do it despite that.
