Non-violent protests work because it really highlights the brutality of the oppressor in contrast to the moral righteousness of the protestor. It's a public opinion tool.
However, the moment you move into the arena of violence, all of this is null and void. The only question is: who has the bigger guns? That person will win.
In this case, whatever you think of the moral standpoint of the two students, the ICE-banner student has the optics in their favour. They can claim (and have in the video) that they're peacefully protesting and exposing the violence of their oppressor, opressor that resorts to violence at the slightest disagreement. Truth doesn't matter anymore, everything is about optics (look at the DOJ FFS).

This is historically inaccurate. Historically successful revolutions usually take a multilateral approach using multiple groups and approaches including taking up arms and meeting violence with violence. A good example of this would be South African liberation from apartheid
