Unfortunately the kid who did the punching fell for the trolling of the asshat doing the recording. The aggressor (the asshat) was intentionally trying to provoke someone into a confrontation, and succeeded. And the puncher is now guilty of assault and battery (and there is video proof!) and will be punished, while the asshat will walk away even more smug and empowered to do it again to someone else.
The point I am trying to make is to not feed the trolls. It doesn’t matter what bullshit they spout, or how angry it makes you: do not engage them unless they are literally (and I mean literally) endangering you or someone else. Ignoring them is the best way to shut them down.
Edit:
I interrupt this regularly scheduled downvote-fest to bring you an important update. I feel like this needs to be said because it appears people aren’t using their heads and simply reacting on pure emotion.
If you are standing by yourself (even in a crowd of people), and someone comes along and does something worthy of being punched or otherwise assaulted, don’t. You are by yourself, and you will either bore the sole responsibility of any trouble, or if the other person is not alone, you will get your ass kicked. And for what? Principle?
Principles sound great, on paper. But when you’re alone in the back of a cop car/principal’s office, or bleeding out in an ER, they don’t do shit for you. Nor do they do shit when you’re in court being arraigned for breaking the law (regardless of how morally right you are).
It’s simply not smart.
Now, if you really want to make a difference, you need to bring yourself up (and above) their level. Believe it or not, they are on a level higher than petty assault and battery. They are organized, unified, and they are working the system to their advantage. They have power in numbers.
So do the same. Organize your people. Do not stand alone. Gather evidence. Turn their system against them. Just like in Minneapolis, France, and Hong Kong.
Use your brains people, otherwise you’re really no better than they are (different side of the same coin).
Now you may continue downvoting me because “punching nazis”.
How's that been working for the US government so far? We ignored them right into the highest office in the nation.
We’re not talking about the US government. We’re talking about stupid high school kids.
All the more reason to teach them fully the first time that fascism is not okay.
Negative reinforcement works great for that, especially for brains that are still developing.
You know what doesn't help with problem behaviors in children?
Ignoring them and hoping they'll go away.
No, you teach them to be smart and not act on just emotions. You don’t teach them to go and get arrested because somebody said something they disagree with.
Maybe teach them to organize against people like the aggressor, and rally them out of the school. Or teach them to worm the system so that admins will be compelled to get that asshole out of there.
Simply “punching nazis” because you had an emotional reaction only reenforces the asshole’s behavior, and causes unnecessary grief on you.
But yeah, “punch nazis” because “mah emotions”. Real smart. That’ll teach ‘em!
The lesson isn't "punch Nazis because mah emotions", and the fact that that's what you take away from it says more about your outlook than any of theirs.
The lesson is that direct action against racism and fascism is immediately necessary every time, lest we end up in the flaming dumpster fire that we're currently in, and if that direct action involves negative reinforcement for a racist piece of shit, then it's a lesson sorely needed that their parents should have taught them long before situation like this.
You'd better believe every child in my extended family is being educated on the paradox of tolerance as soon as they're able to grasp it.
'ignoring them is the best way to shut them down' haha lol, lmao even. I wish I could still believe this. As the other person said, silence only helps the oppressor.
No one said silence. Read my update.
I used to feel this too but honestly it's been Nazi punching time for a while now. They're not just trolling anymore they're actively pushing the envelope for what we're willing to normalize. I hope they get their jaw broken next time
Exactly. Read my update.
Silence only helps the oppressor, never the oppressed. Your silence is what empowers them to continue spouting their bullshit, not people standing up to them regardless of what the law says.
We do not tolerate intolerance. If they want a fight, then give it to them.
The only takeaway is to recognize that the law is not your friend, it is actively what empowers them to have a voice and acts as a shield for them to hide behind.
No one said silence. Read my update.
That's weird, because my take away was that next time he should punch him harder to make the consequences worth it.
Read my update.
You're taking this way too seriously. It's just a kid getting punched by another kid. FWIW I didn't downvote you.
🤷♂️ It is serious. It may not directly affect me, but it is a growing mentality in society as a whole that I do worry will undermine any valid attempt at “fixing” our situation (whatever that may look like).
But at the end of the day, I will move on. Hopefully the glasses kid in the video will be able to also.
And, thank you.
