Some of this is misinformation in that most of it can be turned off, and some of the functions will change as it develops.
Can little users like me turn it off or do comm operators do that?
Little users like you are already using a Lemmy instance as it is configured.
A Lemmy admin can
Regarding the post you linked above, most of the controls can indeed be disabled, and they are disabled by default: https://piefed.zip/c/fediverse/p/1005977/piefed-admin-settings-that-allow-to-enable-or-disable-content-filters-they-are-disabled-by#post_replies
That's kind of the baseline for consenting to use social media though. I have hangups about unspoken tools for suppressing content. Which, I don't think the instance I am currently on has. Not that I can tell yet if it did. It could be as you say, that there are tools currently on sopuli to do that and I just don't know because they're not being used.
But nobody has pointed them out and since this is all open source I assume somebody here would
Well, I'll give you one example. Piefed has tools designed to suppress new AI posters. I don't know if other instances use it - probably not, but Piefed.social does use this. Can it get it wrong and incorrectly alert us to users who are not using AI? Absolutely. Does this bother you? Legitimately curious.
I imagine every instance has the capacity to turn some cogs to censor content, but will choose not to. Sopuli for itself absolutely is blocking some instances though.
Sure, that does sound good actually. I probably would be bothered by it if my autistic ass managed to trigger it though, which has happened often before in other places. But that's a good point, I guess something like that working correctly would be entirely dependent on people not knowing how it works.
Wow that's actually kind of embarrassing that I don't even know which instances sopuli is blocking. I will go look.
Sopuli is blocking hexbear and lemmygrad. Same as most instances.
I guess I'm not surprised, those are the usual suspects. But if I want to hold these opinions I should probably at least know off the top of my head what is getting blocked
A few Lemmy instances have automod bots that remove content automatically according to baselines set by the admins.
There is no way to know if an instance is running an automod except when it acts.
Sopuli does not use one as far as I know, but Piefed instances like piefed.zip don't either.
Gross. Glad most of Fediverse is still small enough that it's feasible to mod manually with small teams. I'll keep watching piefed development though. .zip sounds interesting if they stay hands off with that kind of stuff
To be fair, if a community is active enough, it makes sense to have an autobot in place, mods can't spend 24/7 monitoring the community.
There are spammers who regularly register and post links to whatever they are advertising.
Probably true. I like to think that's the good use case for downvotes but I know Fediverse is trying to get away from that a little.
I also forget that most instances don't have manually approved registration Come to think of it I don't suppose sopuli did. It would help, spammers are everywhere but they tend to avoid having to exert effort over many repetitions of a grift attempt
Every function there is admin controlled, so it's referring to admin panel controls.
Okay, yeah so it being possible to turn it off wouldn't really matter much to someone like me. It might as well just be always on.
Not that this is a sweeping indictment of piefed or anything. I'm sure all these features in concert are going to result in a unique experience, which is valuable anyway. Sorry for using statements like "it's broken", that was kind of shitty of me
Well if you really find them onerous, you'd join an instance which has turned them all off - which would be piefed.zip.
Ohhh good point. I'll keep my mind open to that
