Or you could vote 3rd party and let everyone know you don't have the slightest clue about American politics and are completely unaware that a 3rd party candidate literally can't win because no 3rd party has done the work to become a household name or even have a single member in Congress.
Fact: The most popular 3rd party candidate in the 2024 election had a whopping 0.5% of the total votes cast.
When you vote for a 3rd party candidate for president you get NOTHING, instead of possibly getting something you want by "utterly betraying yourself and your morals" by voting for someone that can actually win.
third party voting is a signal that maybe things should change fundamentally, and since voting is the only way to express things, maybe you should listen instead of convict
I voted Kamala, mind you
So . . . you don;t think things should change?
why would I not want things to change?
Because you didn’t vote third party?
Is that the only way to affect change in this world? I used to call myself an anarchist. Do you think I just vote to change this world into one I wish it to be? And even so, maybe the change I sought was "anyone but donald trump" because I literally could foresee this administration doing exactly this? When fascism is on the line, I was strategic in my actions by voting for Kamala. I'm no accelerationist. I would like to vote third party in national elections if the system were friendlier to it, but I am well aware of how the national election system works in the US—I know it was in favor of donald trump winning, and I couldn't have that for my neighbors.
A signal to whom exactly
Anyone who wants to interpret it. Obviously a number of people are not choosing between democrat or republican. That should mean something changeable to anyone who cares about the implications of it. What does that mean to you? Does it mean anything to you?
That's great.
Voting 3rd party for president when the party behind that candidate holds absolutely no power or influence is still a stupid thing to do. Voting for a candidate that only gets 0.5% of the votes is not intelligent. And the other 3rd party candidates some people voted for got less than that.
Now, normally, I'd be advocating for people to vote 3rd party for local/state elections so that maybe one day a vote for a 3rd party presidential candidate wasn't a stupid thing to do. But in case you haven't noticed, things are getting pretty fucking sketchy. So this time around I think it would be pretty dumb to vote 3rd party in the midterms because we need to do EVERYTHING IN OUR POWER TO STOP THE FASCISTS IN CONTROL.
Then, when/if we get things back to a somewhat normal situation, I'd be more than happy to see people voting 3rd party in local/state elections to try to build a 3rd party's influence and I'd probably join them in doing so.
I encourage you to talk to people in real life about this
voting third party means you vote,
if a third party gets a couple percentage in the polls, major parties will bend over backwards and adopt their policies.
Literally has not happened since Teddy Roosevelt. And I think that's the one and only time.
meanwhile, feeding the Republican-Democrat ratchet has definitely worked out well.
Definitely not.
Not going to throw my vote away in the meantime though. That's just stupid.
you're funny, I explained the power of third parties, and you gave me an example on when it worked (trying to discredit me), and it is clear that not voting third party has lead to fascism. yet you think voting for the next Democrat controlled opposition is not wasting your vote?
Democrats are so aware that they don't even have to do anything to get votes, because we all know their opposition is worse.
they sponsored a genocide in the last election and are still in favor of it. despite it being extremely unpopular. they don't care. they are there to protect their corporate donors.
Nope!
look how Brexit, it was a fringe idea that no major party wanted, but a third party started polling near single digits and the major parties immediately took its ideas. and even though UKIP lost the election, it was the biggest winner.
Cambridge Analytica.
Cuomo running as 3rd party because he lost his own primary, snd still getting within 10% of Mamdani
Or I don't know, the thousands of local city officials that run as independents or bipartisan.
Local elections are not relevant. Not really.
NYC is enormous and their election politics are bugfuck crazy but still - not that relevant to national.
