Jobs that actually require in person work like childcare, manual labor, food service, construction etc... should be correctly valued as inherently high paying because they require a commute. If a job listing has the requirement of in person work it should always entail a significant pay increase over an equivalent remote job, even and especially if the job is fundamentally not possible to do remotely.
The first step to get rid of pointless commuting is making the extreme cost to everyone of doing it visible and part of the "economic conversation" rather than an asterisk at the bottom that kicks the working class in the gut twice a day, every day.
