American here, do you have to hold that while filling? Is this a weird cultural thing, or is this overstated?

In most places in my country, the locking pins are removed, to prevent spills from people who leave them running, in case of the auto stop not working.

I carry a rivet in my car to use as a pin

Why would they spill? They have automatic shutoff valves over here.

There are many scenarios, such as the user not putting the spout far enough in, or the spout being pulled out by someone tripping on the hose, etc... It's obviously rare, but when it happens it's really messy, and dangerous

Idk, maybe they have. I wasn't allowed to pump in 2024, and in 2025 I rented an EV while I was there.

I never quite figured out what's the problem holding the nozzle for less than 2 minutes while filling up.

Because its unnecessary. The very simple technology exists where you don't have to. Why do something needless like that just because?
