It's rhetorical, I'm trying to say at no point have the Dems ever been leftists. They are a more socially progressive right wing party.

Yes, there were literally communists who fled Germany during 1848 and would join the union army.

Enough that a former revolutionary, Franz Sigle, was promoted to general, because German immigrants who'd also fled in 1848 looked up to the guy and were willing to join to serve under the guy.

Uh, yes? Maybe not a major US party, but yes of course.

No major party in the US has ever been leftist, and the historical Democrats being discussed here (the racist segregationists who invented the KKK) were the opposite of leftist.
