He didn't, all of the BS "philanthropy" was always a tax deduction maneuver and to funnel money into industries that he was personally vested in.

The same goes for all the other billionaires that pretend to give out money for good causes, remember when Meta ratboy said he was going to give away all but a small percentage of his money? Yeah, did people actually believe him and that it wasn't a tax evasion scheme? Jesus christ, don't trust the Greeks even when they come bringing you huge wooden horses that make no sense and that you don't even know what to do with.

People forgot how hated Gates was in the 90s. Microsoft under his leadership went into all kinds of monopolistic and anti-competitive shenanigans (they still do but it was way worse back then).

MS did so many shitty things it is hard to keep track. They destroyed computer OS diversity every chance they got. This is why there were never any successful alternatives. It wasn't because Windows was GUD.

Yeah. The deal he made to have new PCs come with windows installed was super anti-competitive and is the reason they basically own the OS market now. It also set back Linux as a competitor.

The push he made for the Internet Browser market was also quite anti-competitive and is the reason Firefox was born. Firefox was created as a pushback to Internet Explorer, long before Chrome was a thing.

Yeah I think the whole monoculture for computing was a very bad thing at the time and we were all deprived of the diversity that could have been. I remember OS/2 rather fondly as it was way better than Windows at the time.

Things change, and now the Linux and XNU kernel run the majority of the computing devices people use. Between being the backbone of the Internet and used in the majority of consumer faced internet devices, Linux has truly dominated.

I suppose it would also be dominate on the desktop if it wasn't for Windows. Not that MS isn't doing everything in their power to make it happen with their current anti-user agenda.
