Can you stop assuming you already know that I'm wrong for a moment to honestly consider my position on it's own terms?
I'm not saying we should soften our position politically, or walk back from our values, to be more appealing to them.
What I'm saying is that mercilessly dunking on conservatives for our own amusement is counter-productive. It calcifies their beliefs and drives them further to the right. We should, instead, take the opportunity to show them a moment of human empathy so that we can widen their perspectives. Or, at the very least, quietly enjoy the schadenfreude, without feeling the need to get a needless "told ya so" moment.
Democrats have spent decades coddling these dickheads while being openly hostile to their own left flank, and you're saying they haven't done that enough.
I'm explicitly not saying that. Please re-read my comment and try again.
Yes, the poor innocent trump voters deserve an umpteenth chance and fuck the left. Again.
I am further left than you are. I am advocating from a leftist position. I'm not saying to give anyone any kind of chance, all I'm saying is that acting hatefully towards hateful people will only makes them more extreme in their positions.
As leftists, we need to choose an alternative to hate if we want to defeat it.
Get the center to quit acting hatefully to the left first then.
I defend leftist positions against liberals, centrists and right-wingers literally all the time.
To begin with, the whole democrats/republicans thing is kinda bullshit to begin with. There are only two sides that matter: the working class, and the ruling class. Unless you are able to survive entirely from profits of businesses/rental income, you are working class.
The entire purpose of political parties is to divide the working class. They are bullshit. None of the parties represent your interests, they all represent the interests of the ruling class.
The ruling class are your true enemies, and the members of the working class they manipulate and gaslight into fighting for them are not. We need those people to realize their true enemy if we want to win.
The message the left is getting is "fuck you, we're going to kiss this bigot's ass because we would rather him have his way and murder your friends than ever do anything you want."
Can you explain for how showing compassion for someone means you have to kiss their ass? You keep putting words in my mouth because you want to argue with me. At this point I am beginning to wonder if you're a fascist just pretending not to understand this point to waste my time.
Can you explain why there's sympathy for this bigot that doesn't exist for the left?
If I were a fascist, you would listen.
Okay, now it's clear that you're just arguing with me for the sake of arguing with me. In the long run, I can only hope that my argument sinks in, and you consider acting with more compassion in the future, even if you can't acknowledge in this moment that you were wrong.
I can only hope that one day you'll treat the left better than you treat the right.
How am I mistreating the left?
We’re talking across each other, not to each other. Whenever I see this “make nice with bigots” shit, and that’s all it is, I can’t help but notice that it’s always a fucking prelude to moving to the right again.
The left needs assurances that this won't happen, and they will never get them because it's just going to happen again.
I have been trying to talk to you for over half a dozen comments, but you keep treating me like I am some enemy. I totally understand that feeling of seeing the overton window shift towards the right and you are absolutely correct that there are liberal institutions who push that "well, let's be civil, and hear them out" bullshit. That's NOT what I'm saying. That's never been my position, but you keep treating me as though it is.
I'm saying we need to keep pushing back, hard, against the right wing, in any way we can, but the reality is that cruelly dunking on conservatives who are suffering the consequences of their political project doesn't help, and that it is counter-productive to the overall goal of defeating them. That has been my entire point in this entire conversation and it is honestly driving me crazy that you can't engage with it.
That's because I consider your messaging to enable those same institutions.
And I'm saying that this has never been a concern when there's hostility toward the left and understanding toward the right.
We should show compassion towards all people who are suffering, instead of reveling in their suffering.
That is the point you are trying to debate, right now.
If you think that it's better to revel in someone's suffering instead of showing compassion, you are enabling fucking fascism. You can "what about" and "well actually" all you want, it's honestly disgraceful.
As long as they're on the right. The left can go hang. Show some fucking sympathy for the people this guy would kill if he thought he could get away with it.
Or continue not doing that ever.
Here's a scenario. Imagine there's a cop, who just had a divorce.
That cop will, later today, respond to a schizophrenic person in distress. The cop is armed.
You get the opportunity to tell that cop one thing before they go to respond to that call.
You can either say:
Or you can say:
Which of these responses is more likely to lead to a disabled person getting fucking murdered by an angry cop?
You're showing greater sympathy for murderpigs now than you ever will for the left.
ok
Your previous comment advocated bootlicking.
no
Just tell the perfect holy officer what he wants to hear and he won't murder you. If he does, it's your fault.
not what i said
How is it any different at all? The officer isn't the bad guy in your hypothetical. The guy being shot is. Just like when a fascist reacts to Renee Good's murder with "well if she had just followed his orders she'd still be alive!"
Exactly like that in every last way.
you didn't answer my question, you're so focused on being right that you can't see how wrong you are about pretty much everything you write.
I was exaggerating.
Ok, what you honestly believe then.
Your entire argument is that the victim is responsible for his own murder if he says the wrong thing to the pig. Just like some bootlicker saying Renee Good deserved it.
Sorry I can't be a cop or a bigot and therefore worthy of your compassion.
Somehow cops who kill black people for fun are needed to be listened to more than the people who want them arrested for murder.
But we're the unreasonable ones. My God the DNC bootlickers will really listen to anyone to the right of Reagan.
I just wanted to say that your patience in the face of what looks like willful misunderstanding in this thread has been exemplary. Well done.
Thank you, I appreciate that, though I think I need to learn to disengage from these people a lot sooner, I find it really tough because I just want them to actually just talk to me as a human instead of trying to constantly fight me. It's a little reminiscent of when you're trying to help an animal who doesn't understand you're not trying to hurt it. Some people just don't want help, or they can't admit it.
