I'm hoping to pull up a monster like this someday after having left a few in the ground. All the ones I pulled liked like they had barely been growing for a couple of months!

Did you, by any chance, transplant them when they were small? Carrots realy hate that and tend to skip root growth.

Nope, they were all direct-seeded. Three different varieties in fertile, well-draining soil with no rocks, clay, or significant compaction.
