Djent?

Nah, I'd label it extreme progressive metal but not djent. This album is all in standard tuning on standard-range guitars.

For a really clean djent example, Periphery released MAKE TOTAL DESTROY around the same time that Ne Obliviscaris released Portal of I. The word "djent" actually comes from the sound of playing staccato on the lowest string of a downtuned or extended-range guitar, e.g. 1:09 of MAKE TOTAL DESTROY (although the whole song is djent as fuck 🀘😈🀘). On this track, the lowest string is 8 semitones below standard. Colloquially, the guitarist is "almost playing bass".

NeO was probably aware of djent at the time of release, but my understanding is that the compositions on Portal of I (1) are more black metal influenced, i.e. NeO is a "prog-ification" of black metal, and (2) predate the online djent movement. NeO's next album actually did venture a little bit into djent territory since it was recorded with extended range guitars in that instrument's standard tuning.

Holy shit that song is metal aff!! I didn't know that's what djent specifically referred to and I've been listening to a lot of Gojira and Meshuggah for months. Thanks for that tidbit.
