Or he can just....remove civil liberties anyway. Why the need to jump through hoops?
Fascists just love and adore fake appearances. They are all about the propaganda and getting their hardcore base to rally around a common cause. That's why the Reichstag fire was so effective for Hitler, it was easy to scapegoat the communists and old government and get the base to support the idea of taking complete power.
Sure, trump could just declare martial law and seize everything. But it would be significantly easier and longer lasting if he has a Reichstag fire to rally up a January 6th 2.0.
It doesn't matter if the excuse is plausible. People who want to show their loyalty can do it by claiming to believe the unbelievable thing.
By claiming to believe the lie, you also lay a claim to being part of the in-group so the rules (like telling the truth about things) don't apply to you. Of course, the truth is that 99.9% of the people who think of themselves as part of the in-group were never part of it, and will eventually be treated the same as the people who they're trying to trample on.
Dude, half the world believes in some entity that created everything and we are his center of attention. Why would not they believe in false narratives of their master and they love to hate minorities
Rulers need the cooperation of the masses. This is all about concocting a chaotic political environment where people are afraid enough that they won't stop the power grab.
It's possible it will backfire, and we should be doing everything in our power to try to make that happen, but that's the overall strategy.
The cooperation of the masses angle is extremely important. As fucked up and idiotic as it is, many people are fully buying into the narrative that she ran him over and deserved it. It's hard to believe when you're here on Lemmy, but it's working on a shocking amount of people, as well as obviously his base. So waiting for an actual event to point to will legitimize it in a massive way.
Yeah it's too bad we don't have clearer video. Like if you watch carefully and thoughtfully, it's pretty obvious what's happening but if you're motivated to lie to yourself, the view is just obscured enough that the deception can survive.
Like a lot of longtime BLM people were puzzled that George Floyd was the one to break the dam of public outrage because things like that happen all the time. But the difference is it was documented so clearly, so intimately, that there was simply no possible justification. We may need a moment like that to break through with ICE and unfortunately I'm not sure it will be Renee Good just because we had bad luck with the camera angle.
A dash cam is a good investment for a lot of reasons.
Wouldn't that footage be in the custody of ICE/FBI right now? Meaning it wouldnt see the light of day most likely.
He’s currently courting the necessary political figures to be able to do so without major disruption to himself and those already onboard.
It’s easier to fight fewer people. It’s pleasant to own nice things.
