Over eating is a symptom of a larger issue - obesity is a disease, often a chronic one, and the sooner we defeat it instead of shaming it the sooner people can be healthier and independent.
Weve been calling people names for decades and we've only.gotten more obese - shame is not making the serious issue of obesity and obese populations better, we must try different solutions, and glp-1s have been the current best solution.
I do think it could be argued that other things like improved nutrition and regulation of addictive and hyperprocessed and contaminated foods and even walkable and bikable infrastructure and attractions would help too - but those are solutions the more obese societies, such as mine, are unfortunately not yet ready to try - and so glp-1s offer at least some reprieve - and hopefully a crutch into a healthier tomorrow.
I think it's all very interesting, and glp-1s could be a very helpful tool in the fight against obesity.
The skinny people I know well dont think about food in the same way that I do. When I diet, it's very similar to a panic attack when i think about food but deny myself. My brain perseverates over that food, and very rarely can I stop the perseveration by ignoring or through mindfulness exercises. My understanding is that glp-1 essentially fixes this problem, and that really would be a game changer for me. I've lost 80lbs without glp-1s and put the weight back on -- twice.
Then we consider how simply losing weight reverses chronic health issues even without exercise, and a great case is made in favor of treating obesity with glp-1s without stigma. I would be willing to stay on glp-1s, even a microdose, for life to keep the food noise at bay and maintain a healthy weight.
We just need to get the cost of the medication way down so it's widely accessible.
