I want them to have empathy and foresight so they are not terrible people we have to share existence with.

Some people aren't though. Do you want those people to change their minds ever or never?

[–] vladmech@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Obviously change their minds, sure, but also somehow figure out an extrapolation that if this one singular instance deserves empathy, maybe, just maaaaaybe they could extend that to other things as well.

Who's to say that's not going to happen?

The point is, getting pissed off even when people with opposing views come around to your side isn't going to get them to do it again in the future.

They don't come around to your side though. They still think there are exceptions to be had

I mean sure, if I saw that actually happening I’d be ecstatic. That’s not what I ever see happening though so I keep my expectations in the basement and maybe one time in 30 I’m pleasantly surprised.

And FWIW in person to a person that’s flipped views I’ll be supportive, and I’ll go through the whole “hey maybe this extends to other things?” And lay the groundwork for growing because I’m not going to shit on them directly for doing something positive for once, but privately I’m not holding out hope that they’re actually going to learn and grow from this to realize empathy is the most important thing we can have as humans.

No one is saying this but you.

This whole thread is full of people outraged that she came around because of what it took to get her there.
