Caring about ARs is a "minimum performative effort" initiative. They're generally an expensive, niche firearm, so banning them actually impacts few people, but they're scary-looking, "military" weapons. AR bans are most likely to get public support, regardless of any actual impact on gun deaths. It's the firearm version of a transgender bathroom ban.

Low end AR-15s are not any more expensive than a mid-quality deer rifle. Here's a thought though. If only women had AR-15s there would be far, far less killings. If the Amish were the only ones who owned AR-15s there would be virtually no killings.
Many buy AR-15 rifles because they want to kill - as did Kyle Rittenhouse murders. They fall back to shotguns, handguns or whatever they can get their hands on, including bombs, flammables and vehicles.
