A white guy with a beard would not be called that in a small town.

They’re more likely to be mistaken as a fellow racist.

[–] Ironfacebuster@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I got called that when I flipped off a guy in a lifted truck who almost rammed into my car on purpose in a parking lot

I'm a white guy with a beard

[–] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 1 points 23 hours ago

Probably projection.

[–] SkunkWorkz@lemmy.world 70 points 2 days ago (4 children)

Dude is wearing a nice coat and a scarf. Don't you know if you are not wearing a trucker hat and a coat from the army surplus store that you are a fag.

[–] IronBird@lemmy.world 15 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

can confirm, any guy wearing a scarf in the sticks is probably (considered by others to be) a fag

I was in WV visiting family for Thanksgiving. I wasn't wearing incredibly nice clothing, but it wasn't just a hoodie or whatever other junk is cheap. I really felt out of place (which I was). I was getting a hotdog at a place that only opens for two days every year now, that was a staple a famous, and the next nicest clothes was probably some old guy wearing a jacket either from a surplus store or from Vietnam or something.

The good news is no one cared. I wasn't called anything and no one seemed to be bothered. I am a straight white man though.

True, if your Carhartt looks unweathered you’ll get glances

As someone who wears a surplus Czech army field jacket, I take umbridge with thine implications. Surplus is just thrift with a bias towards khaki, camo, and questionable food products. Also you can get some pretty solid storage boxes via surplus vendors, I keep my bungies and jumpers in a waterproof 30mm ammo case in the bed of my truck

It would have to be someone who knows him, or something about his style, accessories, or behavior, that emboldened a stranger to assume he was gay. The comic gives no hint at any of this being evident.

Or maybe that guy calls everyone a faggot because he’s always confrontational.

[–] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 31 points 2 days ago

I assumed he's exhibiting casual homophobia rather than actually knowing Adam's sexual orientation.

[–] PabloSexcrowbar@piefed.social 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

In some places, it's basically supplanted the word "asshole" for a lot of people.

[–] nagaram@startrek.website 0 points 1 day ago

My boss is from a small town and, for religious reasons, doesn't swear and is deeply uncomfortable with it.

But we asked one day if there's a swear he does use he said

"I hate to admit it, but faggot rolls off my tongue too easily."

Its the closest he's ever come to swearing.

[–] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

A guy who called everybody that would get his ass beat pretty quick in a small town.

[–] Soggy@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Depends on how trim and tidy it is.

[–] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I don't know if you noticed, but beards made a comeback during the pan.

[–] TeamAssimilation 1 points 1 day ago

I always wanted to grow a beard, and the confinement was the ideal situation to see if it suited me. Never shaved since then, and I think I never will. Beards are great.

[–] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

I’ve had a beard since 2011 so I may not have noticed

People really think the south/rural areas have people being giant racist homophobes to strangers... No they save that for people they know or think will agree with them

[–] SailorFuzz@lemmy.world 28 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

Here's where you're wrong

Their litmus test for "people they think will agree with them" is just: be a white man.

I am a burly white dude. Tall, big beard, I look like I walked out of the mountains.... Unprompted, some white people will casually say some unhinged rascist shit to me. And have, many times.

One time there was a shooting nearby, a white maintenence worker told me about it, and then without missing a beat goes "it was two black guys shooting at eachother, so much for brotherly love, right?"

Another time, in a gas station up in the sticks, Im buying a can of monster. Some white stranger, unprompted, taps me on the shoulder starts telling me about how the logo is a Jewish letters for the sign of the devil.....

So, no, you dont have to be someone these people know.... you just have to a white man. They assume any white man (especially masculine presenting) is one of them.

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 13 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Yep this has been 100% my experience too. How do you deal with them?

[–] IronBird@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

depends on how much you want to fuck with em, in the case of jewphobia i like to give em a l'chaim.

"oh shit, the jews really are everywhere"

[–] VindictiveJudge@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

I tend to look like a hippie that was forced to dress up for church and people definitely just assume I'll agree with their racist bullshit because I'm white.

[–] Heliumfart@sh.itjust.works 13 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Haha, I would disagree with that. I've had "fuck you, fag" yelled at me many times in rural areas.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Yep, a few feet of the Purdue campus and suddenly started getting called a removed by random drivers

[–] sem@piefed.blahaj.zone 1 points 14 hours ago

Why is this one removed but the others are not

[–] coffee_tacos@mander.xyz 1 points 2 days ago

I had a very similar experience on campus a couple years back, Indiana is not the place to be.

i'm pretty sure i give off "hey, whatever your views whoever you are i'll accept and validate you" vibes in person then, because jesus the titties on a walrus on a jetski christ the things some people have confided in me.
