The premise of MAD has kept us alive so far, no reason to think it won't continue to apply. Russia is counting on it.
Agreed, but that is what increased our reluctance for "total war" in my opinion, it's not that our people have lost our spine. Nukes allow the weaker opponent to counter punch much higher than their weight class, this has even worked for North Korea.
