Doordash announcement.

Rival tech giants DoorDash and Uber are suing New York City over laws requiring their apps to offer customers the chance to tip delivery workers at checkout — not after an order is placed — and set the default option to at least 10% of an order’s cost.

But why the opposition to having the tips at checkout? This does not conflict with the notion of offsetting labour costs.

In Europe tips can be added at checkout or give cash in the local equivalent of $1.25 and folks will be happy if you do it (it's definitely not required).

My guess is they like the uncertainty. If you know you are getting a shit tip you just won’t pick up that order, or game the system on it. But if any delivery COULD be good..

Interesting.

Here in Europe the delivery folks don't see the tips as part of the order (even though on the buyer side they are deducted at checkout) and they are paid out in a batched manner, so you can't link the a tip with a given order.

That's why I was wondering why the US delivery services would even care about the tips being deducted at checkout.
