As the father of a Minecraft-obsessed kid, this feels intended to fuel my dislike of Minecraft.

So did the movie. And all those obnoxious YouTubers.

Is that it? Is mojang just an elaborate put-on?

[–] wizardbeard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 50 points 1 week ago (1 children)

No, but Microsoft bought Mojang out 12 years ago, and Microsoft gonna Microsoft.

[–] yakko@feddit.uk 6 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Everything Microsoft does is bad. I use arch btw

[–] TheBat@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago

There's a pill for that

[–] django@discuss.tchncs.de 32 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Microsoft stole my minecraft account.

[–] Pechente@feddit.org 17 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Mine as well. There’s a class action lawsuit, I signed up for it.

[–] nylo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 week ago

where does one find such a thing?

[–] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 8 points 1 week ago
[–] someacnt@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 week ago

Wait, so that was also Microsoft? Oh no.. I just gave away more money to them :/

[–] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 20 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The YouTuber that got me into Minecraft was like 40yo when I started (I was already in my 20s back then for what it's worth) and is anything but obnoxious. If you're specifically looking for YouTubers and streamers who aren't annoying, you will definitely find them. Have you seen regular old children's TV? "Obnoxious" is just what children like.

[–] Notyou@sopuli.xyz 17 points 1 week ago (1 children)

"Obnoxious" is just what children like.

So that explains Mr Beast.

[–] LH0ezVT@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 week ago

Basically, yeah

[–] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 12 points 1 week ago (2 children)

nah dude Minecraft is great. sandbox game that allows creativity and problem solving and whatnot.

now, the microsoft-approved and promoted servers and ad content, fuck all that shit with bedrock. but basic Minecraft is great. just gotta get your kid onto basic java and away from bedrock where they serve you ads and shit

[–] SlartyBartFast@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Get a mod with grappling hooks and hang gliders and tornados and bouncy shoes, awwwhhh yeahhhhh

slime sling my beloved!!!

slime sling and hang glider will forever be the greatest mobility option in modded minecraft

[–] Aneb@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Its been a number of years since I played either version, dont you pay for java and for bedrock? Why do they insert ads? Back in abt 2019 I didn't see any of that on Bedrock

[–] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago

I don't think it's like external ads, just ads for Minecraft stuff hosted/promoted by Microsoft. idk, I don't pay attention to them and try to avoid bedrock. but yes, you have to pay for each version of the game, around $30 each

[–] Trainguyrom@reddthat.com 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Generally if you own a license for one version on PC you also get a license for the other, but it does sound like there's cases where you don't.

When I got my eldest a license it covered both Java and Bedrock, and my license that dates back to the Beta days also gave me a free Bedrock license (I tried the Nvidia RTX demos then realized how incredibly limited Bedrock was because it would t let me play a normal world in RTX and so I said "screw this" and went back to Java)

I'm pretty sure my wife's fairly new license also gave us both Java and Bedrock edition licenses too, but she's never tried Bedrock

[–] Aneb@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

Yeah I redeemed my account when they switched from hosting on Mojang to Microsoft and I got access to both. But when I wanted to play on my Xbox I had to buy a new license for the my console (it may be that the app cost money idk). I was able to find questcraft and I can use my og license to login and play on my quest 2 headset

[–] Pechente@feddit.org 12 points 1 week ago (3 children)

As many others have pointed out, Microsoft made Minecraft shit. 10 - 15 years ago it was an awesome little game. Loved to play it with my friends on our server. Somebody was always online and you could talk, hang out, explore or do a project together.

Nowadays you open it and it has a shop and some ingame currency and weird collabs with popular IPs. That’s simply not what Minecraft used to be and whenever I watch a modern trailer for it, I wanna throw up.

[–] tiramichu@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 week ago

Java edition, my friend.

I have been playing Minecraft with a small group of friends on a self-hosted private server on and off for the past 15 years. No ads, no coin shop, no annoyance.

As for the screaming YouTubers, obviously they exist, but there are also some nice chill peeps out there. EthosLab or Bdoubleo100 for example - especially their single player worlds where it's just them working on projects and building.

[–] Wizard_Pope@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

You do know Java edition has no shop or anything?

[–] Mika@piefed.ca 3 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Have you all tried Luanti? I've randomly stumbled upon it when I was looking for open source games for Android. I'm not a Minecraft player so I can't tell if it's any good.

[–] Pechente@feddit.org 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I tried it a few times and did not like it very much. Like lots of open source games it was not all that well designed and lacked identity and direction. As the other person said, it might be a fun sandbox though.

[–] tiramichu@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I'm not sure I understand you.

Java edition is also developed by Mojang/Microsoft and is basically identical to the bedrock edition in core features.

It was the original Minecraft edition, and if you remember playing Minecraft 10 to 15 years ago it would likely be the Java edition you were doing it on.

[–] Pechente@feddit.org 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

They asked about Luanti and my comment was about that

[–] tiramichu@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 week ago

My bad sorry, I completely misread what your comment was replying to!

On the subject of Minecraft alternatives, I haven't tried it myelf but Vintage Story seems pretty interesting. Started life many years ago as a Minecraft mod and is now it's own thing.

[–] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 3 points 1 week ago

I tried it maybe a year ago. It works as a sandbox, but it's kind of empty compared to Minecraft and the environments are much less varied. There's just a lot more to do in Minecraft.

minecraft can be very nice and wholesome, it's just that nice and wholesome doesn't sell (or rather big companies don't think it sells in this case). hermitcraft is an example of nice and wholesome minecraft, just a bunch of people playing on one minecraft server for a year or more (and then they start a new world, restarting the series in a new season) and making videos about every week. the members are usually pretty creative and kindhearted, and I can't really complain about them at all except maybe iskall, who had allegations pop up about him sexting women while married, who reacted to the allegations super unhelpfully and who left or got kicked off the server very quickly. major decisions like that are done by the server members voting on decisions instead of just one person being a bit dictatorish.

[–] FinjaminPoach@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago (2 children)

The movie isn't very representative of Minecraft and was probably designed for teenagers who love "brainrot"

Some non-obnoxious YouTubers are the Hermitcraft crowd, notably Grian

Hey! I'm in my 20s and I also love brainrot!

CHICKEN JOCKEY

[–] Trainguyrom@reddthat.com 1 points 1 week ago

Dude freaking Ethos Lab is even making Minecraft videos again. Its crazy how many early Minecraft Youtubers have returned

[–] PieMePlenty@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Meh, minecraft is not so bad. Its pretty much legos. Did it change much? I played it in beta and never since.

[–] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 week ago

Microsoft enshittified the fuck out of it

base Minecraft is still there (except in bedrock, bedrock is super enshittified with official servers and ads and stuff and they make it difficult to connect to your own self hosted server, it's fucked)

but java, you can still play just like old times, for the most part. shittier launcher. more login annoyances. but that's about it in my experience.

[–] yakko@feddit.uk -3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Then you've played it more than me. I said my kid is obsessed, not me. I don't know why everyone is chatting me up about it tbh

[–] PieMePlenty@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

My point is, you should try it and play with him, because it's legos and everyone understands legos and has an imagination waiting to be awoken.

[–] yakko@feddit.uk 1 points 1 week ago

I have tried it, it's not my thing. Don't worry, we're a pretty creative family overall.
