On reddit there's an interesting theory, that it's actually purified dehydrated brains the Others are drinking.

It was related to Carol's comment about the substance having a Ph of 7.1. Brains having a a Ph of 7.2.This kind of makes it an interesting twist, as it means that this is effectively a zombie flick. "... braaaaaaains"
It also opens up some speculation that "the cure" is to simply "stop drinking the brain juice" and they'll lose their ability to join the hive.

However, given the strong reaction the Others had when Carol tried to separate one of their people... it won't be easy.Hmm dehydrated brains might need a second take if she were searching in a dark freezer. I like it.
