I was a kid when USSR fell apart, and it was good, but I was a kid, so in many cases I didn't know better or my parents protected me from the bad things in our life. Still, remembering some details, now I understand how fucked up the system were. From the top of the head:
So, generally, plan economy fucked up the choice and the quality of items, and some stuff wasn't available at all (if you are not an "important person" with access to special stores, or people travelling abroad. I'm not saying that not knowing what "kiwi" is until mid-90s was a big problem, but it shows how bland and uncomfortable your daily life could be.
