Americans putting their thanksgiving in November.

WTF is wrong with you guys. It's 4 weeks to Christmas, you need to spread your food based holidays out better.

Easter, Independence Day, then fucking nothing until bam, Thanksgiving and Christmas back to back.

I don't want to hear about Labour day being a feast, it's a day off work to celebrate working. Stupid fucking holiday.

[–] A_Union_of_Kobolds@lemmy.world 33 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Labor Day isn't about celebrating work, it's about appreciating the gains organized labor has made for working people.

[–] BlameThePeacock@lemmy.ca 13 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Union employment has dropped off a cliff the last few decades, we won't be celebrating it much longer.

The US doesn't celebrate the real one (May Day) anyway

[–] naught101@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

I've been wondering if that's gonna turn around, given all the wins in the US over the last few years (John Deere, Starbucks, Amazon)

[–] A_Union_of_Kobolds@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Not with a gutted Dept of Labor and a Democrat party that's utterly spineless

[–] supersquirrel@sopuli.xyz 2 points 2 weeks ago

Ha, but we have an ace up or sleeve with the hard hitting maverick Chuck Schumer!

[–] naught101@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Sure, but I don't think union power comes from the government... (Obviously the government influences how easy it is to organise, but they aren't the drivers)

[–] A_Union_of_Kobolds@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

No, but without an NLRB with teeth, businesses aren't going to be forced to accept those contracts. Strikes work but theyre not good for anyone.

[–] naught101@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

I don't think they are meant to be good for anyone?

And strikes and other union activity were one of the drivers for the formation of the NLRB, right? (From reading wikipedia, I'm not American)

[–] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 weeks ago

Well the β€œI’d pay you more if you weren’t in a union” type less have been pretty thoroughly trashed these days.

I’m getting cider drunk and pounding candy on October 31st, so October is already booked.

[–] Townlately@feddit.nl 7 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Absolutely, it totally wrecks us because we have no guaranteed time off. So yeah, we all get to play roulette at the end of the year to figure out who gets the PTO. I'm lucky enough in my current job to have that time, but it's not guaranteed. So in the past I just agree to do the shifts because I don't have kids. :/

Independence Day, then fucking nothing until bam, Thanksgiving and Christmas back to back.

Don't forget about the candy-based holiday. Gotta pre-game our feasts with some junk food.

...also Christmas isn't about food, it's about spending money you don't have on shit that people don't need, cuz if we don't, we've been trained to feel guilty. Also a lot of Qui-Gon Gin iconography around that time of year, but I don't really know what that's all about.

I thought it was young Obi-Won imagery

[–] Sterile_Technique@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Well then you're going to HELL, you dirty heathen!!

[–] SendMePhotos@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

Um... To be fair, it has been moved further away from Christmas once already....

[–] OrteilGenou@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

Uh, it's Thanksgiving, Christmas, Super Bowl... Don't sleep on the Super Bowl

[–] BackgrndNoize@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

Their owners don't want their American workers to start getting ideas that they have the right to more time off and better work life balance. So they shove all the holidays in the end of the year to give them something to look forward to and shut up and work for that rest of the year
