If you close it. You won't see it again. Just a little button at the upper right of the page while the sale is on.

If you close it. You won't see it again.

There's no way to close the ads in the settings menu. The banner? Sure, until the next advertising campaign. Dismissing ads is not a satisfactory solution. Just don't fucking send them.

[–] Steve@communick.news 0 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

I have done a lot to virtually eliminate all ads in my life.
But you're being a little more than a little unreasonable here.

[–] Ulrich@feddit.org 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I can only strongly disagree. It is not even a little bit unreasonable to pay for a premium service and not expect to be pestered on a regular basis with advertising to upgrade to a higher tier.

[–] Steve@communick.news 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Again 'a regular basis'? It's annual. On their Black Friday sale. A regular interval? Yes, sure. But regular basis is misleading, and hyperbolic.

[–] Ulrich@feddit.org -1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It is not annual, I get several ads throughout the year in various locations, as I said previously.

[–] Steve@communick.news 0 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

I think some years they run a second sale during the year. Don't recall when. That might rotate even.

Getting it on multiple devices once or twice a year isn't Several. Again, unreasonable hyperbole and over reacting. This is such a small thing you're getting very worked up over.

I mentioned before BofA does a full page add for first time you login each day! What Proton's doing is closer to zero ads, than "several on a regular basis".

[–] Ulrich@feddit.org -1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Getting it on multiple devices once or twice a year isn't Several.

It is, by definition, but without getting caught up in semantics, it is not "once or twice a year". This is the third time I'm saying this. If you want to keep on with the strawman debates, you can do it on your own, because I'm not going to entertain them further.

This is such a small thing you're getting very worked up over.

I don't know what makes you think I'm getting "very worked up". I just said it's the worst thing about Proton, who is otherwise pretty great overall.

I mentioned before BofA dose a full page add for first time you login each day!

I don't know what your point is here. Other companies being dogshit doesn't make incessant advertising any more acceptable.

[–] Steve@communick.news 1 points 1 month ago (5 children)

I'm not strawmaning you. I'm flatly saying you're wrong. I'm saying it's not as often as you're protraying. That your inflating the severity of the problem. Again you said "incessant" when you already pointed out it doesn't happen often enough to fit that characterization.

[–] Ulrich@feddit.org 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Look, another 3 days later, another ad:

This time a pop-up ad when I opened my VPN! Fun! But don't worry, it only happens 1-2x/year...

[–] Steve@communick.news 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Yep still the same one Black Friday sale.

[–] Ulrich@feddit.org 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

LOL you don't get to call it "the same ad" when it pops up in different places just because it's for the same deal

[–] Steve@communick.news 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Of course I do. You're not the boss of me.

[–] Ulrich@feddit.org 1 points 3 weeks ago

And you're not so big!

You're really committed to this bit, aren't you?

[–] Ulrich@feddit.org 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Hey there. Me again. 2 days later and there's another ad:

[–] Steve@communick.news 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

We've been over this. It's the same ad you're seeing multiple times. Like looking at a wall on the street covered by a dozen copies of the same band poster. They all don't count separately. They're all for the same event. Just like this.

[–] Ulrich@feddit.org 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Hey there. Me again. Another week, another ad. Are you still going to delude yourself into believing this is not a thing?

[–] Steve@communick.news 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Oh Wow! This is the first different one! I haven't seen that since I sent a referral to someone.

In fact I might argue it's not so much an ad in itself, but a request for you to send someone an ad. It works more like those reminders a lot of sites have. The ones that want you to complete setting up your profile. It's more that kind of thing than an actual ad.

... Or maybe I clicked the "Don't show this again" button. I don't remember.

[–] Ulrich@feddit.org 1 points 1 week ago

I might argue it's not...an ad

I'm shocked.

[–] Ulrich@feddit.org 1 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Oh look there's another ad today. A week later. But yeah, it's only once or twice a year.

[–] Steve@communick.news 0 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago) (1 children)

Wait wait wait.
THAT'S what you're talking about?
THAT'S what's got you all agitated?
I thought we were talking about the full page advertisement.
THAT'S not even an ad!

You're waaaaay out there. Never mind. There's no debating crazy.

[–] Ulrich@feddit.org 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

That's not an ad!? WTF is it then?

[–] Steve@communick.news 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

It's a little button in the corner to turn on a feature, no different from any other setting.

[–] Ulrich@feddit.org 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

It is not a button to turn on a feature, it's an invitation to spend more money (AKA an ad). You don't even know what you're talking about.

[–] Steve@communick.news 1 points 3 weeks ago

As I said, there's no debating crazy

[–] Ulrich@feddit.org -1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

I'm not strawmaning you

No, you're saying something I haven't said is wrong. I keep telling you it's not once or twice, and yet you still keep arguing with the idea of once or twice. That's the very definition of a strawman.

you already pointed out it doesn't happen often enough to fit that characterization.

I did not. You made that up. I've been using the platform for several years. It has refused to cease, despite my protests. Again, the definition of incessant.

[–] Steve@communick.news 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I was trying to give you the benefit of the doubt, and assume you weren't being literal; That you were being hyperbolic, as I said. It's not Strawmaning if I'm saying your wrong in how often it hapens. Which I am. It's not as often as you say.

It's literally only a couple of times a year. Specifically when they have a sale. That's all. Nothing more. Ever. In total your're only seeing the large ad twice a year. And the upgrade button in the corner of the website for a week or so, as long as each sale is on.

Your characterization and annoyance are extreme and unreasonable.

That's what I'm saying. I'm done.

[–] Ulrich@feddit.org -1 points 1 month ago

You're just lying.
