It shows almost nothing and definitely leads to confusion about who is talking to who :(

[–] buttnugget@lemmy.world -3 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Wait, what confusion? I use Voyager and I have no confusion about who is whom. I can see in the lower reply box that you are balance8873@lemmy.myserv.one.

The only issue with pronouns is that people who assume default maleness should be locked up anyway, so that’s an entirely separate issue.

People who assume default maleness should be locked up anyway

Huh? What the heck did i just read?

[–] buttnugget@lemmy.world 0 points 47 minutes ago (1 children)

You read your moral and intellectual superior explain reality to a bunch of morons. Don’t pull this “we speak other languages” excuse because it’s 1000% bullshit and you should be embarrassed to think it let alone say it.

People, nearly entirely men, assume maleness by default and it has nothing to do with language. It is just morons being morons. My joke about locking people up highlights your unfathomable idiocy in assuming gender when talking to others.

First of all: you should feel ashamed about yourself because you just started using insults in a civil conversation.

It's not bullshit, it's just reality, if i am used for all my life to say "i poliziotti hanno fatto un ottimo lavoro a risolvere la questione" (Masculine plural, used in language to refer to a group of people in which at least two different genders are present.) Translation: Police have done a good job to resolve the situation i am also gonna use "sei un poliziotto talentuoso" (Masculine singular) Translation: You are a talented police officer {The bold-italic indicate what gives the gender and if it's plural or singular} For talking in a text chat with someone i don't know the gender.

You see that if i am a Italian speaker i am gonna use masculine simply because i am used it since...well since i know how to speak and it's a hard change since in Italian you would have to change a bit more than in english your way of speaking.

Here a good source to understand better how it works in italian:

1- mascluine and feminine

2 - articles: how they define gender and amount

From your comments i can suppose you speak only english/english is your main language or you only speak languages that have the neutral pronouns

Yeah...but then what should i do? Many people have as a mother tongue a language that is gendered (the case for many langs in europe and south america since they come from latin) and usually male is used as standard when you don't know the interlocutor gender or is used to describe a group that has 2 or more genders.

Saying something like

People who assume default maleness should be locked up anyway

Is just wrong because you are just blaming innocent people for doing something they have been doing all their lives for reasons beyond their control.

That is exactly what buttnugget is trying to say in his words, at least how I interpret them. I just thought you were not knowing male default.

Other than that, I think we can and should try getting languages more and more to genderless state, but I think forcing it is not the way. (German in my case).

What people often forget, is that languages are always in change and adapting; always have and always will be.

I do my part on adapting language around me by preferring genderless while I talk and write; you get used to it pretty fast. And when you hear children talking, you recognise that they are on it too. Just don’t blame others for still using default male, I agree on that, as this only generates unnecessary conflict and hardening of sites.

Society should always stay fluid, in my opinion, or else we get to a fascist society pretty fast.

Context is important and voyager does not provide that. Many people respond to the wrong person in threads. For example you just replied to me about pronouns which isn't my topic.

[–] buttnugget@lemmy.world 1 points 50 minutes ago

The pronouns thing was the main topic, son. You’re being obtuse. We can all see who we’re talking to with Voyager.

[–] ArcaneSlime@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Tbf, I don't read unames, and my app shows the pronouns in line with and the same color as the unames, so I don't read those either.

Literally no clue who I'm even responding to right now. Doesn't really matter who it is either, my response would be the same regardless of your race/gender/whatever else.

The one exception is whenever I see something profoundly stupid I will sometimes check the uname and go "ah yes cowbee again how predictable" but that's just pure entertainment and learning who here not to waste energy on, most comments are just comments and don't warrant that level of self preservation.

@Cowbee@lemmy.ml out here getting smoked on the regular 😅🤣
