The article touches on how it protects the leaves from degrading due to light and wards off insects...

I always thought it was that, but not for the short time they're on the trees.

It's after when theyre laying on the forest floor.

NA forests have this, and they also have unique undergrowth systems since we didn't have worms.

Those leaves are supposed to just build up, for years
