I'm just saying that the average 300lb person isn't magically super strong.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

No. They're just normal strong, on account of regularly lifting large amounts of weight.

I'm sorry to be pedantic, but you said:

How much do you think a 300 lb person can lift? I guarantee it's at least 300 lbs.

And I'm telling you it's unlikely they can lift 300lbs. Deadlift, lunge, squat. Because that weight is in addition to the body weight they're used to carrying. And even for bench, pull-up, or chin-up, they are unlikely to be able to complete even one rep because those require upper body and core strength, which are not naturally built just by dint of being obese.

I’m sorry to be pedantic

No you're not.

Deadlift, lunge, squat

If they're just lifting their own weight?

You're arguing nobody at 300 lbs can squat the bar?

If you re-read what I wrote, you'll see that's not at all what I'm saying. Regardless I'm done with this conversation because this:

I’m sorry to be pedantic

No you're not.

is unnecessarily rude. Have a great day.

It’s me again.

Again my father was a professional gymnast who became a coach. “Complete one rep” on a pull up bar? He literally would swing circles on those bars, and the rings, and everything else lol. What are you talking about? He wrote a book on the maverick club. A pretty big deal in the gymnastic world back in the day.

I’m not sure if he was 300 lbs but muscle is heavy. Surely he was in the ballpark of it.

Why as you so stubborn that someone who looks fat can’t be athletic? You are wrong lol

The person I was replying was "guaranteeing" that a 300lb person can lift at least 300lbs. I'm sure your father was strong but he was a professional gymnast. He's an outlier. And genuinely, good for your dad - that's great. But the vast majority of 300lb people aren't super fit. They can't all lift 300lbs and this is what I'm arguing. I'm not talking specifically about your dad, I'm replying to the other poster who was making a ridiculous generalization.

More importantly im complaining about the meme. Specifically that a lot of PE teachers in schools were first in some kind of sport. Coaching isn’t as physically demanding as the sport itself and muscle starts becoming fat.

That why many PE teachers are fat. It doesn’t mean they aren’t healthy it just means they stopped pushing themselves to the absolute limit and now are teaching others.

The meme is unfair is my point.

Ah, I see now - that's a very good point!
