Basically it's because "it" is a pronoun, so the possessive acts like his and hers.
Eeyore lost his tail
The gloomy plush donkey lost its tail
Oh, look, it's (it is) hanging by Owl's door!
๐ I am well aware. Somehow my brain farted and "corrected" the headline.
Sometimes my brains asks, "Whose tail? Eeyore's tail! Eeyore lost it's tail." Ugh. Still, asking who or what a thing belongs to is my main clue. :)
Yes, English is my first language. Yes, always excelled at it and other languages. Yes, growing old.
