THE POLICE PROBLEM

3990 readers
956 users here now

The police problem is that police are policed by the police. Cops are accountable only to other cops, which is no accountability at all.

99.9999% of police brutality, corruption, and misconduct is never investigated, never punished, never makes the news, so it's not on this page.

When cops are caught breaking the law, they're investigated by other cops. Details are kept quiet, the officers' names are withheld from public knowledge, and what info is eventually released is only what police choose to release — often nothing at all.

When police are fired — which is all too rare — they leave with 'law enforcement experience' and can easily find work in another police department nearby. It's called "Wandering Cops."

When police testify under oath, they lie so frequently that cops themselves have a joking term for it: "testilying." Yet it's almost unheard of for police to be punished or prosecuted for perjury.

Cops can and do get away with lawlessness, because cops protect other cops. If they don't, they aren't cops for long.

The legal doctrine of "qualified immunity" renders police officers invulnerable to lawsuits for almost anything they do. In practice, getting past 'qualified immunity' is so unlikely, it makes headlines when it happens.

All this is a path to a police state.

In a free society, police must always be under serious and skeptical public oversight, with non-cops and non-cronies in charge, issuing genuine punishment when warranted.

Police who break the law must be prosecuted like anyone else, promptly fired if guilty, and barred from ever working in law-enforcement again.

    That's the solution.

Our definition of ‘cops’ is broad, and includes prison guards, probation officers, shitty DAs and judges, etc — anyone who has the authority to fuck over people’s lives, with minimal or no oversight.

RULES

Real-life decorum is expected. Please don't say things only a child or a jackass would say in person.

If you're here to support the police, you're trolling. Please exercise your right to remain silent.

Saying ~~cops~~ ANYONE should be killed lowers the IQ in any conversation. They're about killing people; we're not.

Please don't dox or post calls for harassment, vigilantism, tar & feather attacks, etc.

Please also abide by the instance rules.

It you've been banned but don't know why, check the moderator's log. If you feel you didn't deserve it, hey, I'm new at this and maybe you're right. Send a cordial PM, for a second chance.

See, people are thinking you're right-wing, because that's literally what you sound like. All the insults just make you look more right-wing, because that's part of their playbook.

As a recent example, it was a very common sentiment amongst Republican voters that student loan debt is bad, but Biden's forgiveness is "unfair", so they can't support it.

You are saying that the whistles are probably a good thing, but they give you a headache... and if you leave it at that, we're gonna fill in the blank.

[–] Devjavu@lemmy.dbzer0.com -4 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Yeah and that's fine, but don't keep on harrassing me by calling me a republican. I do not care about your opinion on my self. Keep that to yourself. And if I correct someone by telling them my life, who the fuck are they to tell me no? What kind of entitled bitch are you?

[–] faythofdragons@slrpnk.net 6 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Maybe stop acting like a Republican if you don't want to be called one?

[–] Devjavu@lemmy.dbzer0.com -4 points 5 days ago

And fuck no I won't stop insulting cunts that try to tell what kind of person I am. Just because I insult you does not mean I support those nazis. Just because I find something annoying doesn't mean I can support it and just because you perceive me as something does not mean I am it. This shitty infighting is what gets me this riled up. I can no express myself about anything in any way that is unique or I will immediately get misjudged and cyberbullied. I fucking hate people like you. You actively taint the tolerance many of us have. Not for stupidity, not for assholes, but for people. You're against africans working in america? Bad. Because of slavery? Good. Nuance, you donkeys.

[–] Devjavu@lemmy.dbzer0.com -3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Then am I just supposed to call every single american an AfD voter?

[–] faythofdragons@slrpnk.net 4 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Why not, I see tons of comments from y'all about how Americans are all fascist losers.

[–] Devjavu@lemmy.dbzer0.com -1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Why not? Because I'm a decent human being and understand that there are nice americans, even though they mostly sound like uneducated pricks with no backbone, with some intense exceptions.

We won't get far by infighting.
And yet here you are calling me part of the worst non-absolute far-right group in your life.
I will not do the same to you.

[–] faythofdragons@slrpnk.net 4 points 5 days ago (1 children)

It's not infighting to tell somebody to shut up when they don't even live here, and come into a post about ICE kidnapping people to whine about their headache.

Get over yourself.

[–] Devjavu@lemmy.dbzer0.com -4 points 5 days ago

Yet you didn't. You called me a republican. Here, let me show you how to say what you said you said: "Hey, that's a kidnapping, so I don't think you finding this annoying is relevant at all." Or if you want to be less nice, which is fine given the circumstances: "The fuck do you mean annoying? These are REAL PEOPLE getting abducted. Are you slur". Add spice as you wish. You're not telling me to shut up, you're just insulting me over and over again. Which is exactly the kind of thing AfD voters do when they feel they have no other choices left. But there are choices left.

Instead of any interest in discussion, I get the answer "You know whats annoying? A military invasion.". Followed by me saying that that's not a strong enough emotion, which somehow got downvoted, which feels near-sighted. Whereafter I am accused of criticizing, which I factually just did not do, and upon me pointing that out you just started insulting me.

And just as a sidenote: I don't care about america's little luxury issues, just as with hungary. If you guys voted for politics that do this to you and DIDN'T GET THE FUCK OUT OF THERE, tough luck. I will still fight for the people that wish for something better, though my power is limited of course. I will argue it fails to compare to genocide. So maybe it's just because I've become desensitized by war and misery, but right now, as it stands, I do not care about the "land of the free" as much as I do about other countries. And if I only ever see everything bad in the world, what am I even living for? So forgive me if I don't care for your always-been fascist homecountry. I recognize that I have it better as a person in germany right now, but you have no idea how much pain you as a nation have brought to europe. I hope your government will become a functioning democratic institution at one point in time. So while I have no self to get over, I will tell you to get over your stupidly fragile ego and national superiority complex. Because you're exactly the kind of person that will complain about your country, then say it's still the best and stay and talk shit about others.
It'll get better, let's hope for as little collateral damage as possible along the way.

And stop the infighting, you didn't even realize you were doing it.

Because your personal discomfort is so much more (or even as?) important? I get you and you could have kept it to yourself. Instead there are multiple posts arguing your point. And I get that too, we're human. At some point, silence is golden.

[–] Devjavu@lemmy.dbzer0.com -4 points 5 days ago (1 children)

You will not silence me, thank you. I will scream until someone hears. Louder than your ears can bear. Because mine need to bear yours.

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 5 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Because your fragility is so. much. more. important.

You sound like a man child, here's your necessary attention. Goodbye.
