Her appearance has nothing to do with this.
i follow her, she's awesome and I really hope she wins.
but it would be false to claim her youth and aesthetic don't help her charisma.
it does, but that doesn't mean she isn't serious or competent.
Hope she wins, we need her and people like her.
helps and hurts. wish I was in her geography as I would vote for her.
doesn't really hurt her. just bigots will insult her for being pretty, or if she wasn't, they would insult her for not being pretty. they'll always use misogyny against any woman who's against them.
You don't think being a young woman has ANY negative affect on being elected in the USA?
i meant that conservatives are going to hate her no matter what.
She could be a 60 year old grandma, and they'll use that against her.
if course she has an uphill battle.
Some of them may even be republicans.
I think it hurts AOC more than it hurts Kat, and I can't put my finger on why. Both are attractive and intelligent small women with a "young" look, but I think AOC has to fight a little harder to come off as a "serious adult". Maybe it's ethnicity, but I don't think that quite accounts for it. Might be just me.
She should not win. My district is not lacking in leftists, and deserves someone who lives in and actually pays attention to the community.
She obviously pays attention to the community, she got thrown to the ground and got hit in the face doing so.
Literally no. She cares about immigrants. She doesn't care about the community specifically, at all. And doesn't even care enough to live there. We don't need to go from someone who responds to the community to someone who doesn't even care to check the communities needs before doing unnecessary giveaways
That explains it, "She cares about immigrants"
hello, are you aware that immigrants are part of the community? ones who are being kidnapped by the state? which she is fighting? maybe it is you who isn't paying attention to the community.
you outed yourself as a racist, by "community" do you mean white people only?
Community as in the actual future of the community itself, not just the larger socioeconomic underlying issues. Immigrants are part of the community, but they are not the only part of the community. She focuses on charity saviorism, without regard to actual distribution of need, which is not something good for a politician to have.
God you are racist
you even acknowledge that those issues are "larger socioeconomic underlying issues". you are sad that she isn't paying attention directly to you? you want her to make you feel special by ignoring when your community gets kidnapped?
...racist. no, I'm saying that she's trying to buy votes by doing giveaways of materials already supplied by school districts. She's performative. She won't even move to the area, instead staying in chicago.
I can have legitimate criticisms against someone who's anti ice without being pro ice. The fact that you can't understand that is shocking. She does not care about the community. The community is not just immigrants, it's everyone interacting, going to school, etc. and she doesn't care about all of that
the fact that you don't care your neighbours are being kidnapped, and you're only complaint is that she's from Chicago is the reason why you're racist.
you have no legitimate complaint
I do care. You're pulling my lack of care just because I'm criticizing her for legit reasons . And no, of my listed complaints being from chicago was not the only one. You didn't read the list, did you?
Hard to care for what you say
I don't think we should take seriously, anyone who doesn't think "neighbours being disappeared by the state based on their race" isn't the most important issue in their community.
show me another candidate you support that is actually fighting for your community not to be disappeared?
.... All of them? Like it's actually funny. You see her most because she's an influencer. Not because she's the only one active. Probably helps that she's not yet been elected so she doesn't have any official duties to perform, unlike many of the other candidates, she has more free time.

He's also been out protesting, also got wacked by ice a bit... And you don't see him on the news as much.
When we have candidates with such strong, proven records of improving cities, who also will protect them as kat would. Why would we go with an unproven influencer?
I'm not, and never will be, a single issue voter, but my a major part of my point is that there is no difference between her immigration stance and the other candidates.

The people who cook your food and build your houses and live in your neighborhood are not the community. Hmmm
I love how you're intentionally ignoring what I'm saying to pretend I'm racist. No, I'm not saying it's good for ice to kidnap people . I'm saying we already care and she pretends we don't .the community is not only, it includes them as well as others
What are her policies you disagree with?
I don't like her as a politician for 3 main reasons: performative giveaways, where she gives away what is already provided and pretends her being in charge will allow these things to be provided, which they already are. It shows she doesn't really care about learning about her community, and instead just prefers to virtue signal.
She is running a campaign without living in the area, with majority of donations from outside the area. Influencer first politician second is a red flag, and especially considering she's showed bo willingness to actually move into the area despite repeated claims she will shows she's already lying, not a good sign.
And the third is that despite living in a leas leftist area with someone who deserves to be contested more/not already solidly leftish politics, she decided to run in the district she does not live in.
Going straight to higher office without attempting to gain practice or build up a "resume" in lower office is questionable as well, but less so than the rest.
there is no shortage of people as left as her running in the district to vote for, who do not have nearly as many red flags.
So no policies you disagree with and she faces jail for trying to protect people in the community she's running for, which I believe you acknowledged in these replies. (You did mention the citizenship status of the people you think she does this for, for some reason though) Sounds fine to me, you go vote for someone else, sure, but I will prefer someone who's also willing to endure violence and legal consequences to protect anyone in your community.
"Immigrant" is not a citizenship status. Green card, visa, undocumented, citizen, are citizenship statuses.
... Do you think she's the only one who's done this? Like honest to god? Because, to be clear, she is not. Off the top of my head biss as well, though I probably won't be heading to him in the primary. You don't understand the district, which is why you think she's the only one like that
You will find the same list of issues on damn near every dem candidate in the district. Her policies are not special here. They're not different. They're the baseline norm
Don't play fucking stupid, you know what I mean and I'm not an english speaker. Are you dense, I already said I don't care if you don't want to vote for her, I just think you have a really big fucking rage about her for a very fucking petty reason, leading me to believe there's some underlying motivation for having a grudge. Or you're just an asshole, who's petulent because you haven't done anything in your life and vent that rage by insulting a woman who's been beaten up in your district, congrats. She's not gonna throw you off a roof because of her last name by the way, just to be clear.
Quite literally, the reason is stated. She doesn't live in the area.
I am not a racist despite your rabid accusations
You not speaking English seems to be very related to your lack of understanding
And voting based on that is childish if you agree with the policies.
I haven't called you racist, trying to look for a valid (logically, not morally) reason for your very obvious distaste for someone who is an extremely solid progressive I thought maybe a bit of internalized islamophobia could be one possibility.
Sorry, but your points aren't hard to understand, they are just childish.
And I should have added native English speaker, I'm a fluent English speaker on A1 level, born and living in Switzerland, so you've been argueing with someone on a different continent. Instead of just dodging what policies you disagree with you could have just dismissed everything I say or do 😉
... Islamic? Her last name is Islamic? You think I knew that?
Childish to vote against someone who doesn't care to actually research the community or live in it? No, that's not childish. Not when there's candidates with actively proven records like biss, who've shown to be strong on issues I care about like bike lanes and walk ability...
I made a clear answer to the question. Stop pretending I didn't. Clearly they are hard for you to understand. I made it clear. Her issues are boilerplate, not special in the district. So it's better to vote for a local who understands the other issues at play, not just immigration, especially when we have people on the ballot with proven records.
So? The only thing that matter for is if you don't understand that politicians are meant to represent their districts, or if you don't understand the history of how bad, bought politicians tend to love to live outside of the areas of their districts.
I love how now you pretend you're fluent after claiming to not speak English. Nice. I don't know the ranking, the languages I know do not use it.
The first part is giving me weird vibes.
Do you believe she would oppose bike lanes and walkability?
Again, you vote for someone else, that's fine with me, but you haven't been painting her as just someone with boilerplate politics, honestly it seems like you are kind of obsessed with her.
I live in Switzerland, we have no Lobbying laws, that happens all the time here, but what gives you the idea Kat has been bought?
I am fluent in English, sorry that you can't destinguish between not being an English speaker and not being fluent in English.
What language you speak doesn't use it? I have a Cambridge University certificate stating my ranking, so English uses it. I'm pretty sure all languages originating in Europe use the system.
I'm annoyed with how people push her as a forefront of progressive politics when her politics are relatively normal. It's extremely relevant to me because I live in il-9, which will obviously make me much more invested than a typical lemmy user.
No, but I'd rather a candidate who consistently and strongly pushes rather than being passively supportive
I'm pretty sure I stated her politics were neomal for the district multiple times in this convo.
It's not as much I think she's bought as much as I think it demonstrates a lack of loyalty to the community typical to be people who end up corrupt. Basically, a risk factor.
English is my native language, but Japanese is my 2nd
I think we should try to balance public image with solid policies. We live in hard times globally as left-wing people, we can't afford to throw away solid people because they aren't radical enough.
Fair, vote for someone else, but if she has publicity and solid, if not perfect, views, she's still a positive force globally.
Yes, your rage is just weird.
My assumption is every politician will be corrupt in some way, I will always try to push society to the left, even if it's just a tiny bit.
Japanese seems to have N1-N5 levels, it's similar. A1-3 are pretty much fluent, B1-3 can do daily life in the language, C1-3 is the basics.
Gonna assume your japanese would be A level, since you mention it as your second language, props for that.
She's not pushing anything to the left. Again, not special for the district in question. Against the other front runners she's about the same, possibly only more left on immigration.
She's blatantly.vote buying, pretending she'll have the power to do things she will not and buying things with campaign funds to just give out... That's vote buying in my opinion. Over promising too far to be reasonable. Her lying about moving into the district is also just off the bat lying, also not ideal for a politician.
I'm closest to a high b1 level likely. I don't fit into traditional levels very well in the n system as it focuses primarily on comprehension without no speaking input. And my knowledge acquisition is random. I would pass an n2, and would certainly fail n1. I consider it a 2nd language because I can communicate complex thoughts in it.
I think I know what your problem is, you're an egoist, you only care about yourself, you don't even view the rise of fascism as a problem, as long as your life doesn't change. You're a collaborator.
If you think using your campaign funds to give back to people is vote buying, you're not thinking from the view of a community.
Your japanese answer just proves my first point, that's the system for Japanese, and if you have problems with comprehension, have you considered that maybe that's the reason they focus on comprehension?
Again with the wild accusations. Like when you pretend I'm racist, you bought into kat's online image and think she's the only one who will do anything.
"Give back" is not what she's doing though. She's pretending things aren't supplied, and buying them to give away. Things that are already given.
... I don't have problems with comprehension., for the things at my level.. that wasn't what I was trying to say
instead of raising money for ads, she is using it to feed the people in her district.
if that isn't something who pays attention to the community, I don't know what you want
No, she doesn't pay attention. She did free give aways for things already fully provided to those in need. That's not paying attention, not doing research.
Got any sources that ain't your local fox "news"?
i love that any type of backlash someone gives your automatically a fox news subscriber lol.
Influencer politics clearly works on liberals too ...
of course.
I don't watch fox news. Her giveaways of backpacks and school supplies were fully supplied in Evanston already.
Kat made a post on Bluesky once where she showed a tweet by a Republican who was asking people to "stop posting photos of [Kat] when they attack her because she's genuinely attractive and that makes the attack not land" or something along those lines. I wish I'd saved it. It was a solid self-burn.
That Republican was basically afraid that Kat would steal male GOP votes simply by looking good lol
She is cute af on that real though
And of Palestinian descent. Even if for really dubious reasons, humanizing Palestinians and extending any shred of support is a no-go in certain circles.
To her opponents, appearance is basically the whole of her worth.
They understand in the current media environment that attention is power and attractive people get attention
I mean, it kinda does. The fact that she is young, attractive, and media savvy means that people will pay more attention to her (not saying that's good, just that it's how our society works). The more attention she gets, the more of a threat she is to the regime, which is why the they're trying to prosecute her for getting assaulted by ICE.
Aren't you a smart one
You haven't been paying attention to the Republicans have you.
