the only thing i hate about this is there's no chance for jonathan groff/rogue to come back :(

Why not? River Song met the 10th, 11th & 12th Doctor.

I expect the new show runner (I'm speculating a new show runner) won't want to utilize characters they didn't create, but who knows. Or maybe he'll make an appearance in the holiday special (and Ncuti will pop back in as well).
