Would her attire signify being in mourning in the time and place this was painted? That seems to add more to the story.

Yea, that's my take. Hard to see in this compressed image, but she has a tear running down her cheek. I got the vibe that she's on her way to a funeral, and already emotional, and the guy behind her just has no social awareness and is making things much harder for her.

It could be even worse, going with more era context.

The dude could be actively mocking her.

"Shame about your husband, what's your plan now?"

That kind of an interaction.
