They seek shelter in the belief to be benevolent, for otherwise they would see themselves as the evil they are.

The older they get, to more they realize that their money won't save them. They want to be immortal, they want to have a legacy, they want to be remembered kindly.

Of course there's also some who know they're evil and are OK with it. But even those are not immune from seeking something... higher. See Thiel's antics with the antichrist.
