Big brain tech dude got yet another clueless take over at HackerNews etc? Here's the place to vent. Orange site, VC foolishness, all welcome.

So much fuss over someone's dotfiles and progressive web apps

[–] rook@awful.systems 23 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Mmm. There’s certainly nothing else about any of the people or projects involved that’s likely to be a source of fuss, either.

No sir, nothing but apolitical dramaless software development as far as the eye can see.

Looks like I'm out of the loop. Care to elaborate?

There are various other posts here on the general subject.

Omarchy is a deeply uninteresting and partially-assed project that has been thrust into the limelight because if the creator’s political leanings, not because of any merits it might have.

[–] froztbyte@awful.systems 4 points 1 week ago

yeah it’s pretty amazing

in one respect it’s at best one-percent-assed (for both meanings of). in another, it’s all ass

takes special kind of fuckery to create garbage that fractally terrible

My impression from reading the stuff posted here is that omarchy is a nothing project that's being aggressively astroturfed so a series of increasingly fashy contributors can gain clout and influence in the foss ecosystem.

DHH has always had a cult of personality, since the very early days of Rails (I started hearing about his boring ass in 2005. Ugh!).

He attracts people who are into hype. Around 2013 junior developers loved to say “did you hear what DHH said?” And I’d have to explain to them that I didn’t care because he seemed like a douche and rarely said anything someone smarter than him hadn’t already said many times.

He is wealthy and has a soapbox, so he is a dumb person’s idea of a smart person.

Since the start!

Tested it yesterday. Don't really like it. Don't get me wrong it looks nice and seems to be kinda polished, but its way to much work to remove all the stupid shit I don't need. DHH says its for professionals. Arch and Rolling release distro don't fit with working professionally in my opinion.

I'm happy if it gets more poeple to try linux but it's not for me. Debian all the way and despite what DHH said, you can install hyprland on debian (and even ubuntu) no problem. He seems to be kinda a linux noob :)

[–] froztbyte@awful.systems 8 points 1 week ago

you type “DHH said” twice in one post like he’s anyone to listen to, amazing

(pro-tip: he ain’t)

I've used rolling distros professionally on my one-man workstation and they've been fine. I wouldn't want it on a server without a regular update schedule, rigorously followed.

"Polished" is not what I'd call the bits of Omarchy I've come across.

been using Arch(EOS) as (mostly casual) daily driver (honestly feels smoother than ubuntu), what should i look out for?

[–] bitofhope@awful.systems 2 points 1 week ago

Nothing. You should only look out for things when you notice a need that is not fulfilled by what you're currently running.
