Wow. You've been busy exploring these corners. That's great.

I think for the most part the .ml problem these days is a bit blown out of proportion. I've just been here for a couple of years so the worst that I heard of predates my time. Because a lot of the people registered there are not Tankies and openly condemn those views. But... I still don't follow more than one or two communities from there because the mods were indeed a lot of the times part of that famously problematic side of it.

But hey, if it isn't too much to ask, could you explain to me what the hell happened with Hexbear? I read some complaints but from my interactions with it, I never noticed anything that I could point out?

Like .world has a lot of those 1 day old accounts, the quick registrations for trolling and harassment that they take too long to squash. And lately it has been nonstop.

But Hexbear, I'm completely clueless of what happened...

Hexbear, I’m completely clueless of what happened

Hexbear came from the Chapo subreddit, a subreddit about the podcast, that became a general left space, and was banned because of it. HB joined Lemmy before federation was a thing. They developed their own fork of Lemmy while the Lemmy devs worked on federation, so when federation went live, HB wasn't able to federate until the HB features were brought over or brought into compliance with the main branch.

During this time, HB went through a lot of sessions where they figured out the correct opinion on trans people, imperialism, outdoor cats, etc.

Before HB federated, .world "preemptively defederated hexbear as a last resort", and people on .world have been making whatever shit up about them ever since.

Shortly after federation, libs were ridiculed for saying ridiculous things, mostly about America's historical role in the world and the reality of places America doesn't like. They responded mostly clipping things out of context in places where HB users wouldn't see or respond, or simply making shit up and telling admins and users to block them.

At the same time, HB started defederating instances because they conflicted with HB's policy of being a safe space for BIPOC and trans users.

"Correct"

If Hexbear users had correct opinions on imperialism they wouldn't "um ackshually" when someone says "free Hong Kong"

It's weird to see people on this site hate Trump, then love a bunch of reactionaries in Hong Kong waving Trump 2020 banners.

Hong Kong is the freest it's ever been; China freed them from a government imposed by the British where they were ruled by a council appointed by the crown and major corporations.

People who are hostile to China bringing up Hong Konger's (or Uyghur)'s struggles have the same relevance as Zionists bringing up gay Palestinian's struggles; the purpose isn't to advance their cause, but to justify hostility against the whole group. This is especially obvious when you literally anything at all about the subject and realize their supposed defenders know literally fuckall about them beyond hostile data points.

There is a different conversation to had regarding specific policies, but anyone going "free hong kong" in response to protests against fixing the law that prevented a murderer from being extradited and tried lacks the background and desire for that.

There are just tons of these - here is a few more.

TLDR: there is abundant evidence that Hexbear is a troll instance and it scares new people off to have to deal with them, who then ofc go to Reddit and complain how bad the Threadiverse is, thereby lessening the migration over here overall. In short, dealing with such a 4chan-like space should be opt-in rather than making people learn the hard way.

They and .ml are certainly the whipping boys for every toxic online behavior across the fediverse.

But I'm popping into the Hexbear front page and trying to find the ultra-offensive content I'm told is scaring everyone off. It's all pretty banal as far as I can tell.

Seems like some folks love to run in and post "Russia and China are bad and if you don't agree you're a terrorist!!!" Then they get banned, come out to other more liberal communities, and cry about it for months.

Hexbear users will send you a picture of literal pig shit if you disagree with their opinions on China, like by believing the uyghur genocide exists

[–] Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz -3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Have you been to Urumqi or spoken to a single person who has been to Xinjiang? I have, and I should be back there before Christmas depending on how things work out. Claiming theres a genocide going on there is as worthy of ridicule as claiming Portland is a warzone.

[–] MummysLittleBloodSlut@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

The US is actually committing a genocide right now. Mostly against immigrants.

[–] Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz 0 points 2 weeks ago

I have not done enough investigation to speak on the issue, but it wouldn't surprise me if the US's actions towards immigrants did meet definitions of the convention on genocide.
